How much weight to sink a 4 ft section of 4 inch pvc pipe, capped at both ends.

For this exercise You may assume neutral bouncy for the pvc it self.

For extra credit , how deep could you submerge this section ( assume sch 40 ) before it starts to deform and crush ?

last part first, schedule 40 is rated to 220 psi so at whatever depth 221 psi happens is about your bottom.

notice please that that is 220-221, whatevah!

now for the first part, assuming neutral buoyancy then 1# should be enough to sink it but for good measure I would fill that suckah with rocks and sink it.

the pipe is neutral , the air inside the pipe is the issue.

I want to suspend a crappie condo at 16 ft in 30 ft of water. smile

I'll get you started. First you need to find the volume of the inside of the pipe.

then all you have to do is fasten some nylon twine or rope or electric fence wire with a cinder block 14' below the pvc. let the air float it.

drill holes and poke your "limbs" in them then spray expanding foam in the 4", use extension straws to fill it full, mickey d's work great. or just drill a couple of extra holes and blow foam in them to fill the center

it will float forever as the foam is closed cell

Sink a heavy anchor, attach one end of a rope or chain to the anchor and calculate how long the rope or chain would need to be to keep the crappie condo at 16 feet deep; attach the loose end of the chain or rope to the crappie condo.

I know how to make it float smile but the question is how much weight to sink it ?

It will probably an 8 ft section with " limbs only on the bottom , top end capped, rope on the bottom down to weight.

Drill holes throughout to insert limbs. Attach 2 cinder blocks on both ends with zip ties or wire. Lower with rope.

The Deliverance float trippers thought this and it didn’t turn out so well.
