Take a "crazy" guys guns, that should solve the issue... Yah ,just take a crazy guys guns ..... I’m sure that will go about as smooth as turd in a swimming pool..... or it would start a world war 3 , ok corral shootout with the cops as the “crazy” gun guy barricades himself deeper to ensue a Mexican standoff and god knows what else..... but hey what do I know . I'm thinking we need to throw in anyone who has a gang affiliation should be banned from owning a gun. We should also put a big, bold, capitalized notification in every new gun box that says murder is illegal. Govt or private sector only?

The OP's question is a fair and valid one. We are always quick to say, "we need more mental health checks." "Those folks with mental illness should not own guns." Half the population will be diagnosed with a mental illness at some point in their lifetime. Statistically speaking 1 in 5 people posting on this forum right now are probably living with and being actively medicated for some sort of mental illness. Most probably own guns as well. Very tough problem with no easy answer. Yessir, same thing I have been saying just explained better. I think the even bigger issue here is that there is no “mentally ill” caveat in the us constitution. Should we take into account mental health records in gun background checks there becomes a mess that intertwines government, medicine, and medical records that I don’t think any of us want. Not to mention potential constitutional rights we could be forfeiting. Do you think the framers of our constitution would be found mentally sane in this day and age? (no chance in hell) We are so far off the wagon its not even funny.

Your last sentence doesn't even merit comment.

The decision of incompetency is made by a doctor. The medical standard is you are a danger to yourself or others., as far as I know. The VA uses a different standard that will get one put on the "Brady Bill" list. Whether you can manage your finances. they can not legally do that, the law that would have made it legal failed. Sorry, but they are doing it. Have been for years. If the examining psychiatrist/ psychologist checks the "NO" spot on the question about competency to manage your benefit payments, they adjudicate you incompetent, complete with Brady Bill gun-ban and everything. They do give 60 days due process, and you can request a hearing.

People throughout history have flip flopped on many things. Look at many in your party. They wanted border security just as much as anyone now they want them all to come in as they please.
