Least it works for me...

THIS IS YOUR ANSWER.

I went to circle hook on c- rigs a few years back. I use a 7 ft med action so the rod can load when a fish takes. Just start reeling once the rod has a good bend. My catch rate went way up. Its hard as heck not to set the hook though and jerk it out of their mouth. Same rig works great on cats too, btw.

Why a HEAVY action rod?

I use a heavy action rod with 3/4 oz tungsten.

This time of year on Fork, you will get a lot of sandbass and yellow bass hitting your weight. Let it be until you feel the fish swim off with your bait. Bass will come to investigate what the other fish are pecking at, inhale your bait and take off. Otherwise, do what No Weighers said.

First thing your doing wrong is believing that you have to go to deep water to catch fish on Fork in the summer.
