Problem in my mind though is that the country ramp was built by a bass club that used to exist. Now granted they are gone, but they need to put some of those proceeds back into the lake for the fisherman, for when the lake drops again. The floating docks are boat scratching nightmares and theres only 2 tiny slips, many boats cant even use it due to their size. Charging more is fine, if they want to give back.

I heard the park was donated for fishermen to always have a cheap place to launch? I havnt found any details about that though and there is only the small plaque when you leave that i know of.

Anytime you make it down here without a boat, shoot me a message and your welcome to join me James.

I was thinking about taking the family to medina Saturday, no fishing just to cruise. Is Reds boat ramp usually a nightmare on Saturday early afternoon? I've only been there on weekdays.

Reds is pretty much always fine. He doesn't allow swimming so most people just launch and leave there. The longest lines you will find are first thing in the morning when he has the chain up and even that's usually quick

I can pick aluminum cans from Zapata to Medina to pay for the launches.. James you can catch plenty of 10" to 13" its the 14" and overs that are hard to come by. Now until September if you want to fish you better get there at dawn and be gone by 10am, you know all too well how crazy the recreational traffic is on that lake. Debra

Maybe TPWD put the runts into Medina? It is amazing that the white bass are bigger than the blacks, heck I think the crappie might be bigger.

The biologist for this section of the state works 20min from the lake too.... That alone makes me question why they arent doing more for this lake.

My bet is he tells you that Medina is not a nutrient rich body of water similar to Canyon Lake. If you have no nutrient rich water for plankton to grow and thrive, you have no food chain to feed the larger fish species. It's a lake that never had it, and never will.

I have, and that was just about his exact answer. I bought his boat, and when I went to look at it was at government canyon in the fisheries department. Supper nice guy, but he seemed more interested in choke than in Medina.

That would be because Choke can actually grow fish, of course it was built in the worst recharge zone in history. A truer statement could have never been made! Years back when they were constructing the Choke Canyon dam my brother was constructing a lake house near old Caliham before it was a park. One of the TPWD biologist was then living in the big rock house that sits in what is now the park, and he came by and talked to us while we were building my brothers house. He gave us a tour of what was back then the lake bed and river channel and he then gave us a tour of the dam site with all the machinery going digging out the main lake. He showed us the Frio river where I remember seeing just a trickle of water and wondering how that little barely a trickle would be able to fill that big of a lake. All the biologist said was that the Frio runs from all the way up into the hill country and the long water shed wouldn't have a problem filling the lake. That statement might be true during a hurricane season, but I always thought it was dumb to rely on such a poor excuse for a river to maintain such a big lake. That was waaay before the demand for water became so great in a desert after the oil boom took off, which of course has nothing to do with it. Sorry for the but now ya'll can carry on back to Medina!
