so a passenger on a boat fell out, hit the prop and died? How was a kill switch going to prevent that accident from occurring?
Its going to prevent the boat from circling back around and running over said person that was just thrown from the boat. My boat has a hotfoot so unless the throttle sticks I'm really not at the same risk level as folks with the hand throttle, but I will gladly wear my kill switch. In this case the driver of the boat never fell out of the boat. I don't know if would have helped in this case but it might help someone else later..... Do the make a wrist strap for the kill switch? I have never looked or seen one.. Wrist LanyardHere you go!

Most of the newer jet fleas have them. Never seen one on a boat. You can wrap your kill switch lanyard around your wrist twice, then attach the hook around the lanyard. I've done this many times. [/quote] This is what I do. I rarely wear a life jacket unless I'm in a tourney or in rough water, but I always slip the kill switch lanyard over my wrist. I do the same when I am driving my buddies Chaparral at the lake house. No hot foot there so VERY important

It's a kill switch. It takes less than five seconds to attach. Some of you act like the government is coming to lock you up. Geez!

I rarely wear my life jacket, was the same way with seat belts, they made it a law so now I feel naked without my seat belt on, hopefully this will make me wear my life jacket and kill switch, it is a good thing to do, just have to get into the habit. This probably best sums it up for me. I've been getting better and better, but I'm still an idiot more often than I care to admit.

Put kill switch lanyards on ALL your life jackets. That way if you're thrown out your passenger(s) will be able to start the boat and render aid. A nice feature about my Evinrude is if the kill switch is pulled it will shut off the motor and you can restart the motor without it.

I never attach my kill switch to my life vest, I always slip it over my wrist. Quite simple to hook the clip on the chord itself essentially making a slip know, then sliding over your hand.
Seatbelt laws IMO are unnecessary because they protect one from oneself.
That is not the case in this situation. An out of control boat with no driver puts everyone on the lake at risk.

The legislation requires all kill switches on boats less than 26 feet long to have a lanyard attached. Terribly worded. So does the lanyard just have to be attached to the kill switch or does it have to also be attached to the driver? Also, does this kill switch need to be worn while the boat is underway, while the big motor is on, or at all times? I wear my life jacket and kill switch any time I'm going faster than an idle, but this sounds like it might be a pain in the a** for idling a couple hundred feet or launching/loading the boat (I fish alone a lot so there is a lot of getting in and out of the boat when loading/launching). I do not disagree with this being a law, but ticket writers like to deal in absolutes rather than using judgment and I'm sure this will end up screwing the guy that's going 3 mph and endangering no one while the drunken wake board dummies get away scot-free. From the law (b) A motorboat operator may not operate a motorboat less than 26 feet in length and equipped by the manufacturer with an engine cutoff switch while the motorboat is under way and moving at greater than headway speed without first verifying that the switch is operational and fully functional and properly attaching the lanyard or wireless attachment, as appropriate for the specific motorboat, to the operator's body or to the clothing or personal flotation device being worn by the operator. There ya go. So in theory, the GW can observe you underway at greater than headway speed-tell you to stop while observing your hands and movements ("I just took it off when I stopped"), observe whether it is attached as stated by the law when he gets to you, and then ask you to activate it to insure that it is operational. Very well written in my opinion and has no effect on launching/loading solo. I could not find a copy of the new law. Does it say anything for older boats. Mine is a 1978 and I installed an after market kill switch. All if does is pull the key up to the off position when the rope is pulled with your wrist. Sometimes I wear it because I am by myself most of the time. Then sometimes when going from spot to spot I forget to put it on my wrist, which is where I wear it.

But motorcycle riders aren't required to wear helmets. Just another government intrusion.

I agree with the fact that we dont always need new laws, and government overreach is real. But a common sense safety precaution that effects people other than ones self is not that controversial IMO.

Just saying, inch by inch... There are a lot of slow boat drivers who would be perfectly OK with speed limits on the lakes. The comments were everywhere when those guys flipped that boat in brazil at 102 even though they put nobody but themselves in danger. In every thread that talks about fast boats somebody questions why we need to go that fast.
