Does anyone really buy a Rolex expecting it to break? I realize there are places that exist to repair them if they do but that is not the expectation. The consensus on the forum is that the Ultrex WILL break. My point is that manufacturers will have no desire to change as long as we’re willing to “pay double what they cost” for a product that we expect to fail. Unfortunately it’s not just Minn Kota that falls into this category.
I didn't buy my Ultrex expecting it to fail and so far it hasn't. Sometimes failure is cause by abuse or accidents. I don't think it's fair to always blame it on the name.

I have had one small issue with the one on my previous boat and was fixed immediately. I do have a new one in the box that is a spare, never know when you may need it.

Like most anything with new technology there will be some issues. Its a fact the first production year of the Ultrex had some and one of those was the steering cables.. MinnKota addressed it by upgrading the original cables and replaced them under warranty and also added a longer warranty. If your scared of buying one ---it's simple-- DON"T!!

That would definitely be the definition of “Expecting it to break”! Some of us carried a spare long before the Ultrex came out. Just good business-- especially if you fish multi day tournaments in West Texas and there may not be any parts for a half days drive.. .

Trying to remember a trolling motor of any brand that does not break cables. Seems I can get 2 years out of a set of cables.
