Good video. Wish I could knock one out that quick. I like to use buck tail hair and I spend way to much time making just one. The jigs I make are for real clear water so I do everything I can to get three different colors of hair on this jig. Dark on top, grey on sides and white on the bottom. Trying to make it look like a spot tail minnow as much as I can. They really do work though, so the time spent is worth it. I really did enjoy your video though, the jig looks great.
Thanks fishytx. I spend more time on the jigs used for vertical presentations. Not so much on one's I'll be swimming fast. Yall keep us posted on the bite. Won't make it out this weekend but plan on fishing good Friday (bank or boat depending on the bite)
Made my ninth trip to Newman's Bottom on Thursday, April 11th. The big slew was over the road, 16" rubber boots needed. Yegua Creek at equestrian bridge is three feet below full bank. Strong flow and muddy. I caught two, 12 inch white bass in main creek, and 5 whites near the low water crossing. The gar are spawning. Best baits, 3 inch curl tail grubs in white.
Any ideas on how the fishing will be this weekend? My last trip to Newman's got lightninged out. I am thinking of going Friday if I can. I am not sure if I should try for crappie or white bass. anyone have a report from this week? I was thinking it might be fun to try my hand at a cane pole for Crappie if they are in there. I have been given some advice on how to target them but I am not 100% confident in my skills yet so I am hoping to increase my chances by hearing if they are in the creek. Thanks and tight lines!
From past experience (20 years) by this time of the year (late April) the whitebass have left the creek. The crappie should be towards the end of their spawning season in the Yegua too but catching anything depends on the condition of the creek overall. Lots of fresh water can really make finding and catching fish in the Yegua tough. From April until late May I will kayak up into any of the creeks looking for black bass and the Yegua is usually my first choice for nice catchable bass up to 5 lbs or bigger and lots of young buck bass in the one pound range... really a hoot on a fly rod!

April 16, 2019. 8:00 am to 1:00 pm Trip to Newman's Bottom, Yegua Creek has dropped about 2 1/2 feet since last Thursday, water is murky, about 6 inches of visibility, No flow in the slew at the low water crossing. Caught 20 keepers, 5 shorts, no females. Chartreuse curl tail grubs, 3 inch. All white bass.

Dumb question: What's your preferred method for rigging those 3 inch grubs? Thanks.
I rig them on a 1/8 ounce round ball jig head in chartreuse. Yesterday the bite was in the slack areas, main current was too strong. Slow rolling the jig.
Fished the main lake today from the bank on a point of jutted land. The shad are spawning and the white bass and hybrids are hungry. Caught 30+ white bass and 2 hybrids. All caught and released. Hybrids were small but most white bass were keeper sized. Other fishermen had great success today.Bite was hot from early morning until about 9am and quickly tapered off. After a lull the bite picked back up around 11:30am and was sporadic thereafter until I left around 2:00 pm. In the morning shiny spinny stuff worked good for lures but in the afternoon found shad imitations produced better. Others fishing with live shad suspended from the bottom had the best success. With the crowds fishing today, tournament anglers and campers it was a true test of patience. Overall good day.
It was a different world when we were boys and girls....
Hey Guys, brand new here. I was looking at taking my dad (disabled) and 2 boys to Somerville this weekend, was told to go out to Yegua off the main lake, since it is accessible for my dad. Any tips for bank fishing that area? going to to try to catch some fresh shad if I can, for the boys and dad, maybe use some jigs myself. Thanks!
