I grew up fishing with my grandpa. He'd get me up crazy early and we'd be on Grapevine in his little jon boat well before sunrise to drop minnows for panfish. So I've pretty much always fished that way.

I watch this forum and often it seems that folks are catching all times of the day.

My new (to me) home lake is Texoma and I'm still learning my way around.

Is dawn the best? Early afternoon? Dusk? does it matter?

Thanks!

I used to fish early too. But on strippers I have found that they fire up pretty good for the evening feed at at 3pm most days. Also catch better on cloudy days with wind.

Everyday is different. Go when you can. Keep log. Buddies are invaluable too wink

I asked professional fishing guide Bob Maindelle that very question. He said years of logging his trips show about a 30-40% reduction in catches in evening trips versus morning trips. Not to say you can't have an incredible fishing trip in the evenings or the middle of the day but mornings are usually best for most seasons when it comes to hybrids/stripers. Last year's spring and summer I took note and his rule proved true to me on numerous outings. I would go to my faithful fishing grounds and find loads of hybrids schooled up large in numbers and aggressive in behavior in the morning and by late morning the schools were scattered out and less active. I would return to these areas in the evenings and sometimes have an incredible trip but often had difficulty finding numbers like I did time and time again in the mornings.

He said white bass, in particular, seem to bite best with wind conditions. No wind negatively impacting fishing and light to moderate winds positively impacting fishing despite the time of day. I have seen this rule of thumb he gave me proven true in my own outings for sandies.

Bottom line, go when you can go. But if you can go in the morning, you are much more likely to find numbers of fish this coming spring and summer. Take notes and you would be surprised how helpful those notes are to patterning those fish at your local lake in the future.

Tight lines!

Barometric pressure dictates my fishing opportunities , above 30.4 I stay home , below 29.7 I stay home . Wind speed and direction are secondary . I also look at best times to fish via solunarforecast. Com . The above combination has paid off for many trips .

For rivers/creeks, always 4 or 5 days after a big rain. Fish will be up and the water will be clear enough.
