*** Customs in Mazatlán is a breeze *** Not such a breeze if you have to do customs in Mexico City ---- they are A holes. and very time consuming

Mexico City updated their customs process. In Terminal 1 you now grab your bag and carry it to the far end of the luggage return area, show a person your ticket, and they will let you into a blocked off area where you put your bag on a conveyor. You then exit the secure area and then go back through security to get back into the terminal. Article Link

[quote=Scagnetti]Key is to have your layover long enough to avoid luggage or most flight delays. My general rule is to avoid layovers if possible. When you can't then make sure the timing isn't tight. Take your time. Have lunch or a drink to pass time on the layover. Short layovers get to be problems way too often. I always advise those we travel with against them. When they don't listen typically they have problems.
I would have enough clothes in a carry on to get me by the whole trip as insurance.
I have traveled quite a bit domestic and international and never (knock on wood) had a luggage issue.
LAX is a [censored] hole. I avoid it if possible. Last time through there I spent 5 hours waiting on a flight to Sacramento.
I wish I could say that. Delta once lost my rod tube with $900 worth of rods in it. I never got those back American, because of weight problems, took my bag off a flight to Mexico and it took me 2 days to get it back. That bag had ALL my tackle in it except my reels Southwest “misplaced” my bag twice on back-to-back trips but fortunately it was on return flights so I didn’t care I’ve been on a LOT of fishing trips to Canada and Mexico and I’ve seen more than one trip ruined because of the inherent problems associated with air travel. I’ve never understood the mentality though of people who spend all the time, energy and money on these trips and then to save a few dollars, come up with some screwball flight plans putting it all at risk

Oh, now that I think of it, once one airline was late with it. About 20 years ago, brought it to my home the next day!

PS I've saved up for a Mexico trip, over the past two years, can't wait to go. Been there once already, just for a couple of hours though, was driving by El Salto on a gold mining expedition out of Mazatlan. Was in a group of six, but we all fish, so we worked out a 1/2 afternoon on the water!!! One guy in our group, on another boat, got a 10 pounder! I lost one that hit a blade and bull dogged me down into a treee- ouch.

Yep. I hate going through Mexico City, too much of a chance to miss your connection.
