 Trolling- motor on or trolling motor?

When you troll, are you trolling with the motor on and just above neutral one click or is the motor off and you’re using the trolling motor to move forward? Is either way more effective than the other?

Loaded question with many variables. Fishing with the wind, against the wind. Bass fishing? Drifting for catfish, fishing structure for crappie? I could go on and on and on.

Lets say trolling for white bass on a river covering a few miles. Using crankbaits and rattletraps.

Still too many variables such as wind and current. Without either my bay boat will idle at 2.5mph and my trolling motor will pull it along at 2.8 mph. So if it ain't too windy or the current isnt too strong I'll run the TM for hours and not think twice about it.

If you are dragging poles in the water and “Trolling” for fish, then I’d use motor. If you are trying to sit on a structure, fish around a dock or pier then you use a trolling motor. IMHO.

Unless you have a powerful trolling motor using a light boat like a small jon boat and two guys you might get by and be able to troll all day with a good fully charged battery and there is little to no wind, so your distance will vary.
I would suggest a reserve backup battery if you are only going to use a trolling motor.
Once your fully charged original battery runs low, you had better have the backup to get you back to the launch.
I've done it this way in the past, but don't just depend on one battery if you only plan on using a trolling motor.....Conserving the battery is key to how long it will last, and wind and heavy current is the killer.

When l’m doing a bunch of slow-trolling, back trolling works really well. Just slip the motor into reverse-idle and have at it. In heavy chop you can pick up some water. So, keep that in mind.
It’s as easy to control as a bow-mount trolling motor with foot pedal control. You’re just going the other way.
We did this for walleye, up north, all the time.
