Following- I'm sure there is some good info out there, but I haven't found it. I was thinking this would be a lower cost to build type home but unless you plan on doing it, or at least a lot of it, by yourself I haven't found that to be the case.

They really make sense if you are looking for a lot of shop/garage space with a nice living area. If the entire metal building is a home, you aren't saving that much.
Example ... you build a 40x60 shop with an 18' eve. In that space you can do a 2 story 20x40 living space, giving you 1600 sf living space inside the shop and leaving you with 40x40 in shop space. You can go 60x80x18 and use 20x60 as living space (again 2 story), giving you a 2400 sf of living space and a 60x60 sf shop.
I've done a lot of research on them ... been considering building one for a few years.
The solution to any problem - work, love, money, whatever - is to go fishing, and the worse the problem, the longer the trip should be. --John Gierach

Drywall still cost the same as drywall in a house, wiring still cost the same as wiring in a traditional home. Let me give you a list on what you will save on. Concrete flooring is some how more acceptable, less windows are more acceptable, and so on. The only way your saving anything is the shell, which is a barn, unless you want to brick it, then your not saving anything. That shell isn't all that cheap either. JP is right, but still the saving is minimal, the resale sucks. People will tell you different, unless they are lending you money. The banks have seen the true outcome.

https://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/7075856/1I built my own. Loosely documented the progress on the thf I desighed it Drew up plans to scale had them put into cad form for permit purposes. Framed it did electrical and all above ground plumbing. Of course odds and ends. It was a great experience. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

My son built on on his farm outside of Longview. The barn is big enough to hold a couple of 48 motorhomes, couple of trailers and assorted tractors and four wheelers. The upstairs living quarters is a couple of bedrooms, a living area and large bathroom. The problem I see is if you get ready to sell one. They tend to be very personalized in their design and may not fit everyones needs. The amount of people looking to purchase one and the chance that the building will fit their needs tends to narrow the market a lot. He will find out soon, as he is building a house in Tyler and will be selling the Longview property.

if a combined shop/home is what you want have the living quarters built as a shed roof on the side of the shop. 20x60 is 1200sf, 30x601800sf and so on. this separates you from the "work" area and any fumes etc. and keeps dirt/dust from the shop from the home. common wall with shop so you can walk right in. that is how I would do it were it me.
after living in the one I am in herre at the ranch for almost 4.5 yrs. now I would do conventional stick frame instead.

Why is that hopalong? I like the low maintenace as well as the look of them. I'm not that concerned about resale. It will be a house we retire to.

cost less to frame with wood and then add R-panel to the exterior, basically eliminating having the barn built and then going inside and framing everything out with wood

Why is that hopalong? I like the low maintenace as well as the look of them. I'm not that concerned about resale. It will be a house we retire to. maintenance is more than a stick frame, heat/cool is more (metal siding is not a good insulator, wood or concrete siding is much better), hard to add anything to the outside unless you can span the ribs or fit between them, dam near impossible to keep bugs out since the bottom will sit on top of the concrete and to seal it will promote spaces that hold water if any gets in. spent 35 yrs building stuff from decks/sheds to workin on the alamodome and various commercial bldgs. and after living in a 7,000sf "shop" lodge I would not build one on a bet. as others said, you will spend dam near as much as stick frame and not get near the value out of what you spent. just my opinion on it.

something I will add for you to think about, even with the metal bldg you still have to frame the inside like a normal stick frame structure, metal or wood stud makes no difference it still has to be done to hang sheetrock and reinforce interior walls.
