It's a different game. Howell has played it and knew how to play it better. Going for big fish with less bites hasn't worked yet in MLF and I dont see it starting just because there are more boats. These guys will adjust and after a few stops they will all mostly be chasing those smaller fish for more bites. That's how most people normally fish any way. Heres what I think will be interesting. We all know fishermen like to b!+@#. Well, quite a few of these guys will start after 4 or 5 of these events. When they start thinking the scales cost them or they are sucking it up and start getting pissed that catching a bunch of small fish is beating them, the grumbling will start. You can tell a few understand it isnt about the tournament money, it's about the TV money but a bunch want to win. They may keep it under wraps but the grumbling will start just like it did at BASS. That's when this whole thing could get shook up again

Personally, I enjoy the format. Its the big 5 mindset that is hard to break and a whole category of locals that tournament fish go out and fish the same way. What's my big 5? But for the majority including me, we go out and try and catch the best quality/quantity combination we can every trip. And that's what these guys are doing. 11 out of 40 didn't even catch 5. That's 27.5% of the field. Not sure what the limit is on that lake, but my guess had it been a traditional tournament there would've been 3-4 - 0's and another 10-15 with less than a limit to weight in. Only 12 caught more than 10. It wasn't an easy day no matter what tournament format you were fishing. Too many people look at the top 10 of the BASS and FLW leaderboards. Spend some time looking below that and you'll see that not all these guys are catching 20lbs daily.

Also, comparing the "average" fish weight of 20-30 fish to the "average" fish weight in a 5 fish tournament is not apples to apples. Maybe BPT could add a stat line showing biggest 5 of the day? I'm betting a lot of these guys that had a 5 lb or better in their catch had 17-20 lbs for the day, which is what you'd probably see in a 5 fish tourney. I learn a lot more on the MLF format, seeing what guys do to adjust on the fly just to get a bite is more beneficial to me than watching someone drag a point for an hour hoping for a big bite.

Prepare for the future-it will be here tomorrow. Personal Best Large Mouth Bass 9 lbs. 12 oz 5/13/19. Herb Stein, who famously reminded us that “if something can’t go on forever, it will stop.”

BASS and FLW will still scratch that itch. Its the negativity regarding MLF thats ridiculous.

Under 2lb average sounds riveting Whats the average fish weight from a bassmaster tourney? Well the leader in.south Florida in February sure ain't toting 5 2lbers to the scale you can bet your life savings on that. Good news is Aaron Martin's may become a force to be reckoned with.
