Recently stayed at the Cliffview at lake Whitney. The ceiling had mold on it and there was such a bad odor of Pine saw cleaner that it was nausiating. Then while watching TV apparently they gave a second set of keys out to these other guy's and they walked in on my wife and I. Oh and if that wasn't bad enough the road down to the ramp was so rough that I broke off my license plate holder on the boat trailer.

Jackson Hill Marina @ Rayburn circa 2001? Rented a cabin there in February. Inside walls were OSB sheathing that were mostly covered with mold, mildew and other assorted fungi. Heard "things" scurrying around in the room all night long. Never bothered to cut the light on because I just didn't want to know. At check-in the gal said to come by the "caf" for breakfast the next morning, so I did. Not sure what time it was but the sun was already up and it took almost a half hour to find someone to open the "caf" up. Ordered a sausage, egg, cheese biscuit sammich. What I got in return was a wad of cellophane with a watery, milky-yellow substance dripping on the floor. Had I attempted to eat it, pretty sure the biscuit woulda chipped a toof. Haven't been back since but I hear the place is better now.

Balboa Courts, Rockport circa '95? Was a "wild hare" trip the wife and I decided to take. Just loaded up and went down there with no plan or hotel reservation. Got to town about 10pm in the middle of an absolute turd-floater of a thunderstorm. Tried 3 or 4 of our "normal" places and they all claimed they were booked up. Decided we would just head on to Corpus but whipped in to Balboa for one last try in Rockport and they had a room available. Entering the room, it was hard to miss the broken door jamb that appeared to be the result of a break-in. Bottom corner of the door looked like a beaver had chewed its way in. First 3 or 4 feet of the floor was soaked from the blowing rain. Worst chili bowl bed I have ever seen...literally had to hook an arm or leg on the edge to keep from rolling toward the middle. LOL I somehow managed to fall asleep but was nudged awake by the wife to the sound of crackling cellophane. A mouse had found its way into her purse and was munching on one of her ever-present packs of saltine crackers. LOL

Most recently, this past April, wife decided she wanted to gamble on the way home from our trip up to Table Rock so we stopped in at the Choctaw casino in Durant, OK. Nice, big, fancy-schmancy looking place and rooms looked great on their webpage. Went in to get a room but since we weren't members of their "club" and didn't have any loyalty points or whatever they told us we couldn't get a room in the tower at the casino...they had rooms available there, but nooo. They booted us over to a dumpy, 2-story travel lodge looking thing across the parking lot from the nice place. Upon entering the room we were knocked over by the smell of wet dog and cig smoke. Went back to the counter and was told the previous guests did indeed have dogs and they would send someone to the room to "deodorize"? LOL Gal showed up with a spray bottle with some kind of pink juice in it and went to spraying...everything...floor, beds, walls, luggage. Now the room smelled like wet dog, cig smoke and bubble gum flavored windex. Went back to front desk and asked for another room. Next room smelled better so we decided we would shower, change and head over to casino for some action. Hopped in the rain closet, looked up and saw what I can only describe as ceiling titty quivering above my head. Plumbing leak above had stretched the latex paint on the ceiling into a big bag of water/sewage? The big, off-colored droplet of water waiting to drip off the bottom of the bag completed the mammary illusion quite nicely. Decided we would just do a quick "wipe down" with wash cloths at the sink rather than risk getting dumped on. Finally made it over to the casino and I dropped my budget inside of an hour but wife hit pretty good on a couple slots and ended up cashing out almost as much as we had spent on the trip. Decided we didn't want to give any back, grabbed our luggage and headed south back to God's country.

Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading

Back in high school my archery team made nationals in Louisville, KY. The hotel we stayed in had duct tape covering up cracks in the bath tub. The room next door they gave some of us was stuffed full of furniture. Should have came with a penicillin shot

I played tournament softball back in my younger days. Stayed at a place in OKC once for the state tourney. We had booked by phone (this was before internet) and it wasn't the cheapest place so we thought it was ok. We rolled in late Friday night to see an ambulance pulling away from the office. There was a huge puddle of fresh blood on the sidewalk right outside the office door. Since it was late we had no choice but to stay that night. One of our guys found a needle under the bed in his room. Another found a used condom in the sink. Me an another guy watched for about and hour as this chick went around knocking on doors. Every few rooms she'd go in for about 10 min and then be back out knocking on doors. Needless to say we found better accommodations the next day.

Can't remember what year it was but probably back in the nineties.. Me and a buddy decided at the last minute to run out to Amistad to fish some big open tournament.. Figured finding a crash site would not be a problem.. Wrong..

Of course we started at all the high class places like Lakeside, Lake view, Amistad Resort, (Or whatever it was called back then) Anglers inn.. But we got treated like Mary and Joseph and we started working our way back into Del Rio..

After exhausting all other options we pull into a place called the Desert Rose Inn.. Color TV in every room the sign said..

We walked in the office and as bad luck would have it, they had one room left.. $29.00.. [censored] Yeah.. We'll take it.. It was one of them times when a little more research would have been good.. But by that time of day I am sure I had already pulled a cork and I wasn't in the habit of inspecting motel rooms before I paid for one..

So we parked as close to the room as we could and I walked up to the door and stuck the key in the lock.. And the door pushed open without turning the key as there was no strike plate on the door jamb as it had been kicked in more times than a crack house..

And there was no color TV..

I went to the office to report the door problem and report the "No color TV"..

The first thing the "Manager" said as he shouted down the hall, was "Dammit Lupita, them Mother [censored] dons taken another TB.."

After returning to the room, I noticed several other problems.. The bed when turned down had a hole in the flat sheet the size of sack of deer corn.. And as it turned out there was only one bed.. There were no globes on any of the light fixtures.. and the only way you could turn the bathroom light on or off was screwing the bulb in or out.. There was only one handle on the faucet in the shower, (cold side) and not enough water would come out to get the shower head to drip.. And I wadn't about to sit down in that tub with more rust that a shrimp trawler at Corpus..

I lost the flip and decided I would sleep in the luxurious high backed chair that came with the room complimentarily..

I washed my sack with some cold water from the lavatory and climbed into the chair with my 357 on my lap and a kitchen chair propped against the door knob..

Not sure what time I got to sleep but I was awakened by screaming voices in the parking lot and squealing tires.. Followed shortly thereafter by flashing blue and red lights..

Not sure what time I got back to sleep, but about three thirty someone started trying to get the door open and I yelled out, "Get the [censored] away from that door or they're gonna have to pick you up with a spoon.."

At 4:00 am we were eating breakfast at some 24 hour greasy spoon on the west end of Del Rio..

I don't remember how we did in the tournament.. But it was the last time I went anywhere without a reservation..

On the outskirts of New Orleans I pulled in to a motel where the clerk was behind bullet proof glass.
I looked around, and went on into the city and got ripped off for a $120 a night place with armed guards in the parking lot.

Enough of this idle chit-chat. This ain't no retirement home.

Lake of Pines resort exceeded my expectations.
Nice cabin, decent rooms, and an excellent swimming pool.

Clayton New Mexico, west side of town on the right side of the road as you're headed out, sign just says "MOTEL". Gross as all get out, in the middle of the night, one of the residents fell asleep with a cigarette in his hand and lit the mattress on fire. Had the whole FD come wake everyone up.

Another good one was the Howard Johnson on Jamaica Blvd in Queens NY. Don't ask how a bunch of adjusters from Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia ended up there but it was an experience for this ol boy.

Wife made a reservation an an Economy Inn in Bossier City several years ago. Barksdale AFB was very close by as was a railroad track. Between the freight trains roaring by ant the B 52s landing on the roof it was a horrible night. Oh yeah, a bunch of drunk bikers were staying there and the ice machine was right by my room. I slept very lightly with my Kimber.
