Probably going to laughing cus they dont have to go to the dermatologist to get a bunch of spots burned off each year anymore! As far as what fisherman used to wear? Those onesies for adult men they were wearing 40-50 years ago in all the old Bassmaster tournament pictures! Guess they were actually ahead of their time!

Ok,ok - Im sorry - didnt know there were so many sensitive people on here. I guess Im the only one who looks back at old pics and laugh at the way we looked. Im going to go look for some Black Friday deals on gloves and face cover things since for sure this is not a fad. I guess after 10 years there is a reason Im still a greenhorn on this forum, I do more listening than I do talking. Probably a good thing.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt if it.

Do you think the people who wear those mask and gloves while fishing will look at a picture of themselves 15 years from now and ask themselves what was I thinking? You know, kinda like when you see an old picture of yourself in a pair of jean shorts overalls with one shoulder strap hanging free. Some who didn't use adequate protection and are getting skin removed due to having skin cancer might think "what was I thinking?" I don't think these guys who protect their skin will regret it.

Im talking the summer mask and gloves. I see guys on Facebook who fish without an ounce of skin showing, then theyll be at the beach with their family in nothing but a pair of shorts and flip flops . I think very few people who fish like this are actually thinking about the harmful effects of the sun, but instead are thinking about how cool the pros look in it. Im not going to lie I bought a few mask myself, but I just cant do it. Ill stick to good ol sun screen and a hat. I wear the mask and gloves when I fish. When I go to the lake or beach to swim I dont wear them because that would be silly. Im swimming and use sunscreen. When I use sunscreen while fishing my face sweats really really bad. Also I may only swim a once a month vs the countless hours a month standing on the front deck of a boat in direct sunlight. Also covering up is nothing new. Farmers have covered up in wrangler button ups for years in the summer. Ive been to deployed to the Middle East multiple times and in the 130 degree heat they still cover up.

At 33, I wear gloves, long sleeves and a mask everytime I go out. My arms will break out into a rash if they are in too much sun. Never had this issue growing up but I guess you reach a limit at some point. Don't really care what anyone thinks when they see me, just trying to decrease the risk of skin issues in the future.

I love the ones with the face mask and sleeves then wear shorts and flip flops with legs and feet exposed to the sun. Never understood that one.

It's about having the dermatologist freeze spots on your face and cut places off your chest & legs because you weren't smarter when you were younger. I fished with two guides in Islamorada Fla ten years ago and they had buffs on their faces and sun sleeves all day. It is not a fad. I hate putting sunscreen on my face. No matter how careful I am putting it on it still winds up in my eyes and it burns like fire. Don't like the buff either but I wear it. I wear long sleeve Columbia shirts in the summer too most of them with a hood.

All that aside, I read a study some years ago that said people who wear sun screen had higher skin cancer rates than those that dont. My dermatologist says no way. But, I dont remember skin cancer as bad 25 years ago. And I know it isnt Global Warming. Its been a hard issue with me as I get older and get spots. I go get checked yearly. I believe in protecting yourself, but I have a hard time believing sunscreen. I mean girls used try to tan with Chrisco when I was a kid

I'm always worried about cross contamination on my lures from the sun screen. If I'm in a situation where I can put on sun screen in a very controlled environment and make sure my hands are properly washed afterwards, I'll usually go that route. Otherwise it's buffs and gloves even though they drive me nuts. If I get a big fish, the buff is coming off or down though for the picture.

I have had tons of spots burned/froze by a dermatologist through the years off my forehead, face and neck. I wear shorts all the time and have forever. Never a cancer/precancerous spot ever on the lower body. Not arguing at all but just sayn(for me).

My buddies still raz me about my "Buff"... I dont disagree that they look kinda stupid, but as mentioned before this type of sun protection has been around for years with the saltwater guys. I cant stand to have sunscreen on my face, just irritates me and makes my glasses slip down on my nose. I started looking at alternatives and tried the buff, havent looked back since. Even in the cold weather months its nice to pull it up over my mouth, nose, and ears while running down the lake. I also always thought the long sleeve microfiber shirts were silly, till I got one as a gift. Man those things are AWESOME too! Keeps me so much cooler (temperature wise) without direct sunlight on my skin. The Soft Science shoes I wear fishing are a LONG way from stylish, but man are they ever lightweight and comfortable... with NO SLIP soles. These bad boys grip on a wet top cap! Sorry, got off track a little there. My whole point is that some of the products out there are actually beneficial and not just marketing junk. The sun protection out there now is the best its ever been, shirt, mask, gloves, hoodies, pants, and eyewear have benefited greatly from advances in technology. For those of us that dont care to lather up with sunscreen we can be just as if not more protected. Simply a personal preference. I dont really care how I look when I'm fishing, style points dont add weight to your bag.
