I've heard this mentioned before in this forum, so I'm glad I'm not the only one who has experienced this problem. When tying up a Santee Cooper rig I typically use a 1 oz. or 2 oz. disc weight and about a 2" peg float. When I'm sitting on anchor and get some slack in the line the bait floats to the surface. I know if you can keep the lines snug it will keep the bait down close to the bottom, but that's hard to do when the wind is pushing your boat around.
Also, do many of you use the peg float when drifting? I was thinking a 3-way swivel might work better for drifting vs. attaching the weight to a slider. But I've also read that you will get hung up more often using the 3-way swivel. I've tried using slip bobbers for drift fishing, and that works ok except that your bait will be high in the water column - I'm only using 1/2 oz. or 3/8 oz. egg weights under the slip bobber. Maybe I should try a heavier weight and just let the slip bobber sink? I just seem to get hung up too much when drifting, but maybe that's just part of it.

I midifify the santee cooper to use a hook leader with the pegged float tied to a swivel with a clasp for a weight instead Of a sliding weight.

When I've had this problem in the past I just tie an additional swivel above the weight. You don't want the fish to be able to feel the resistance from the weight so I tie it about 12"-18" above the first swivel so the weight still has room to move around.

I dont think Resistance of weight matters except when flatheads are being finicky..........you can make extra long hooks leaders and have the slide weight on leader between swivel and peg float.

U can make your own slip corks with the 3 or 4 inch craft balls from any store. They will float a huge sinker I run 4 oz from the bank so they don't drift so fast in the wind and cast very well.

I usually make peg floats for Santee from wine corks. They work good.
