It's all ridiculous. It's just like DEF in diesel pick ups. Take it all off, get better mpg and there aren't used up DEF boxes in the land fills and up and down the highway.... My wife drives a "CLEAN" Prius V (by her choice, I'm not abusive) that gets 40 mpg but burns 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles driven starting at the 80,000 mile mark. Toyota won't cover any warranty work because the usage is in spec. It's all BS Now talk about the 100 times more particulates put in the air in your scenario. Yes I said 100 times more. They do this to reduce cancer and respiratory disease and its working. Plus your Prius V problem is a problem with the gas engine it has. You aren't trading a tiny gas engine that helps they regenerative system in the Prius, you're comparing a vehicle with a tiny gas engine to a vehicle that would need to have a much larger engine. Funny about DEF boxes. The old diesel engines required more frequent oil changes. So you don't like DEF boxes. How do you like engine oil containers?

Duramax has had the same 10000 mile oil change interval for synthetic for 18 years or so...

I change the oil every 10k. Your telling me with DEF I could go further between changes?

Allison1 drank all the kool aid... Also, was not comparing the Prius to my F-350. 2 separate cases of environmental "improvements". DEF being 1. The ultra clean hybrid Prius being a 2nd. The Prius is supposed to be one of the cleanest vehicles on the road. Just pointing out that this may or may not be true... I am no expert, but if you don't think there are decisions made to make even more $$$ whether these measures are beneficial to the environment or not you have your head in the sand.

Oh, and my last diesel had no DEF whatsoever and the oil was changed every 10-11K miles. It was running strong when I sold it at over 450,000 miles. Just imagine what DEF could have done for that truck....

HE SAID, "It's all ridiculous. It's just like DEF in diesel pick ups. Take it all off, get better mpg and there aren't used up DEF boxes in the land fills and up and down the highway...." My mistake. I thought he was talking about all the EPA stuff.
If you did take all the EPA stuff off, we would have to go back to LSD fuel. All vehicles starting in 2007 will only run on ULSD. If you take the DEF only out you will still pollute much more.
Either way, taking out the DEF in your truck will either require a less efficient method like the DPF or living with more NOx, more smog and more respiratory disease. My choice is for clean.

Best post on this thread Skeeter Hawk. Good point. I was trying to point out changes brought about on the environmental front like 4 stroke outboards, Hybrid vehicles, DEF, etc and it just kind of got away from me...
And I like the 1982 Johnson 75 HP 2 smoker on my bowfishing rig as well. Pushes good AND repels mosquitos

I tell you, just think about all the 2 stroke oil we have spewed into our waterways. Good reason I don't drink tap water anymore.
Going to 4 stroke is a good idea.
And no I'm not a tree hugger.

And no I'm not a tree hugger. And yet the Etec is cleaner burning then all the modern 4 strokes.

I'm no tree hugger either, but I guess as the population grows and grows something has to be done to curb the pollution. Especially in the water...

I thought about the Etech for my next boat purchase (if that will ever happen with the ridiculous boat prices nowadays) but have been reading up on them. There are not many good reviews for this motor. Have they improved? Can you get a newer model that will not breakdown or blow up before 300 hrs? I have never had my '02 Yammy 225 EFI Vmax give me a bit of trouble. But you can't buy new ones anymore.

Etecs have been out for over 10 years now. The G2's for 5. Sure its easy to find negative reviews on anything but to date they have been pretty good motors. Yamaha make good motors but they have their share of problems and actually suck when it comes to standing behind their products compared to others. Exhaust corrosion, flywheel issues, corroding blocks are just a few of Yamaha's problems.
