I've never personally done anything dumb in a tournament. I'm always sharp as a tack. My partners would tell you it was their choice to fish with me... Not true Tom, I remember when your tackle bag was the size of my entire floorboard and was a guaranteed hernia. But yes it was my choice to fish with you... Dumbest thing I remember was trying to launch with my back straps still attached or... Missing park and nearly dumping my friends boat and trailer in the lake as I was getting out... Letting a friend put the drain plug in, back of Birch Creek and start to hear his Camera cycling, water had come in high enough to reach the rod locker and his auto SLR had gotten wet... Fun times!!!

I don't have any really dumb things I have done in a tournament (many other times though). I witnesed a few dumb things my partner has done. These are two different partners.
Partner caught a 13 inch fish and promptly threw it back stating "it was a dink". I then reminded him we were fishing Fork and it was legal. Last "dink" we caught that day. Only weighed four fish. Out of the money by maybe 4 ounces.
Partner had on what would have been big bass of the tournament and put us in second place. Line just snapped about 10 feet from the hook. Got a real good look at her as she dropped back in the lake. I asked him what kind of line he had on his answer was "Berkley Vanish" that he had just spooled on last night. I've had trouble with that line breaking in the past. Made our fish and our prize money "vanish".

This one is on my dad. About 10 years ago, we were fishing a BassChamps tourny at Tawakoni. We hadn't had any luck in practice and considered not going but went anyways. We had a pretty consistent pattern within the first hour, carolina rigged baby brush hogs and isolated standing timber. Towards the end of the day, we had a nice limit in the livewell but the bite had slowed a lot so we may have gotten a little lazy. Dad throws at a piece of timber and the line hooks over a small branch. Apparently, he didn't think anything was going to bite so he let it drop straight down and was jigging it. Then he felt the bite. With the line still over the branch, he attempts to set the hook. We see the fish splashing at the surface for 2-3 seconds but before we can get the boat over to it, fish is gone. It was probably a 3 lber. Our smallest fish was 1.5 lbs and we lost the tournament by less than 1 lb. Took 4th place.

Put the boat on the trailer, got my weigh-in bag out, put our fish in the bag, asked my brother to count the fish in the bag and he said 5. Problem was there was still a fish left in the live-well. We threw the 6th fish in the bag and brought them to the Bass Champs release tank and forfeited our catch.

My first ever tournament about 5 years ago and fishing solo, I caught 4 decent fish on Eagle mountain. I was at the dock and trying to make my mind up about weighing my 4 fish which were all solid fish, maybe 12-12.5 lbs. I had seen what I thought was several large sacks being brought up and figured i was out of the money anyway. I asked a guy in a champion who had pulled up if he had done any good as he dropped of his partner and he said he killed it and had about 15. I didn't see the grin or the sarcasm so after he pulled off and i dumped my fish thinking i was out anyway. Well 11lbs took 3rd and the guy i talked too only had two for like 8 lbs, he was just as sick as me when he heard i dumped my fish, lol. I learned a extremely valuable lesson that day.
Go home at the end of your shift, no matter the cost!

Fishing Ray Roberts Bass Champs. Wind was blowing 30 all day. I fished alone. Once i got the anchor and a long enough rope to hold me in the spot i wanted i fished for several hours,, I had 5 fish around 30 pounds. The wind was really kicking up so i was starting to take water over the bow. I turned around to see water about three inches deep in the bottom of the boat. I loaded up the anchor and stowed all the rods and trolling tied down. Went to put the life jacket on and it was gone. The wind must have blown it out. No kill switch and no life jacket. I didn't start the big motor i let the boat drift looking for the jacket. Never found it. Ended up dumping the fish and going home. I now carry a second life vest. That's effing crazy

-Launching with back straps on the boat multiple times (miscommunication between partner about duties lol) -Had 6 fish in the livewell when we got to weigh in one time.... Dumped our small limit and left -Got my truck stuck when having to park on some grass (it rained all day) -backed my trailer into a ditch after the tournament (took about 30 min and some very helpful anglers to get her out)
Have not had something happen yet that has cost me any money in a tournament but I'm sure ill do it one day!

Buried a top water bait treble hook in my thumb after 2nd cast of the morning. Wasted 1 hour removing said hook. Tough duty.

Day one on Tabke Rock. I had a great limit enough for first on day one. I was bagging em up in the marina and grabbed a 4 pounder by the tag and it popped off and went over the edge of the boat. I weighed in with less than a limit and was in 32nd. Day two I fought back to be in 10th. Final day, I got 4th place. I should have won and led wire to wire. I missed winning a boat and a big check by less than 3 pounds over all.
A clip type tag failed. I was the cause. And it cost me about $40k in cash and prizes.
I now grab every fish in the mouth, with a death grip, and use the old fashioned peircing clips. OUCH!!

Fished a FLW TTT championship event on Belton as co- angler. Going into day 2, I was in 4th place and drew Keith Combs. Before the start, I checked my pocket watch to his wrist digital watch and promptly put my watch back in my tackle bag. You know it, we hammered them. Later, Tourney director calls us and asked if we were ok. Keiths new digital watch was accidentally bumped to another screen, reading 45 minutes later. I dug out my watch and almost threw up. To top it off, after the DQ, tourney director wanted us to weigh anyways. We both were to blame and would have been in the top 3 and lost several thousand in winnings. Keith, I notice writes weigh in time on his hand now, probably has 15 watches on board. I know I do.
