Started fishing bass and tournaments late in life and was not good at guessing weights of fish. My Brother and I fished our first Berkley 8 or 9 years ago and I caught what I thought was a nice under but according to the scale I was using it weighed only 1.32 lbs. Fish seemed heavier and bigger so I put it in the live well anyway. Finished the day and took the boat out of the water. Forgot I had the fish in the well until we began to drain it. Took it out and was walking it to waters edge when another fisherman asked me why I hadn't taken it to weigh in. Told him about the weight and he suggested I take out my scale and weigh it again but to make sure is was reading in pounds and not kilograms. Yep, originally weighed the fish in kg and not lbs. Reset the scale and the fish weighed 2.9 lbs which turned out would have been the heaviest under weighed in. The biggest thing we caught the rest of the tournament was a giant snapping turtle.

I'm not thinking straight and cull the wrong fish. We get to weigh in pull the fish out and low and behold 4 nice ones and one little grn pickle.. So glad you didn't call it a "Dink"

Day one on Tabke Rock. I had a great limit enough for first on day one. I was bagging em up in the marina and grabbed a 4 pounder by the tag and it popped off and went over the edge of the boat. I weighed in with less than a limit and was in 32nd. Day two I fought back to be in 10th. Final day, I got 4th place. I should have won and led wire to wire. I missed winning a boat and a big check by less than 3 pounds over all.
A clip type tag failed. I was the cause. And it cost me about $40k in cash and prizes.
I now grab every fish in the mouth, with a death grip, and use the old fashioned peircing clips.

Had to withdraw my 1st place hourly finish at a McDonalds tourney on Fork one year because I told the polygrapher that in fact, I did not wear my PFD on one occasion when idling from one side of point to the other during the day. I'm just too honest. Only a $1,200 mistake. Coulda been worse, I guess. They did at least give me the option to be DQ'd or withdraw my catch.....

Fork megabass a few years ago in April. Found a 10+ giant locked on a bed the day before. Re rigged that night and grabbed the wrong tungsten weight in a rush. It had an insert that had been removed. I had kept a handful of them to experiment with. Get to the fish at 5am and wait until first cast. About 3rd flip she eats and i set up to instant break off on 65lb braid. Smooth cut .....she was screwed up the rest of the day. Would've won truck and boat combo.

Back in the late 80's met my partner at the lake Sat morning for sign up (Anglers Choice) I ask where is your boat? He replies, you said you were bringing your boat We had to drive and hour each way to get a boat before we could fish that day. Never will forget that.

Fishing Ray Roberts Bass Champs. Wind was blowing 30 all day. I fished alone. Once i got the anchor and a long enough rope to hold me in the spot i wanted i fished for several hours,, I had 5 fish around 30 pounds. The wind was really kicking up so i was starting to take water over the bow. I turned around to see water about three inches deep in the bottom of the boat. I loaded up the anchor and stowed all the rods and trolling tied down. Went to put the life jacket on and it was gone. The wind must have blown it out. No kill switch and no life jacket. I didn't start the big motor i let the boat drift looking for the jacket. Never found it. Ended up dumping the fish and going home. I now carry a second life vest.

swung a 2 1/2 lb bass over side of the boat in the All-American...20 lb line broke and I finished 2nd which cost me $80,000. and the prestige of winning.... 8 years later,I qualify for another All-American,catch a good limit first day which would probably have put me in the top 5..except...when I started taking my fish out of the livewell at the coliseum somehow I had miscounted during the day and there was six fish in there so my catch was disqualified....never know how high I would have finished but I believe I had a realistic chance of finishing in top 5......

I've never personally done anything dumb in a tournament. I'm always sharp as a tack. My partners would tell you it was their choice to fish with me...
