My son fresh out of the Army, wants to go into law enforcement. What's the best route to take?

Border Patrol or Customs. Military time will count towards retirement. Pays well too.

BP have him apply now select S.TX will need several tests, waiting period is approx. 6-8 mths to attend academy due to BI. ML time he will need to buy back the SS amounts to count towards retirement, ML time will also be awarded to the SCD date for leave purposes. Have him contact (830) 778-7866 our recruiting line for Del Rio Sector.

BP too far from home. He's been gone for too long. he's leaning toward hi-way patrol.

Game warden.

I really have no idea. That just seems like the coolest of all the law enforcement jobs.

Texas DPS
Pays very well, great benefits, great academy.
I know 3 young men that have been accepted and graduated academy and now are DPS officers. They started at close to 70K out of academy and three years later are making over 80K

Plus you dont have to live on the border.

Retirement best job ever.

Is he sure he wants to go into law enforcement?

I would suggest that he gets popped for a felony (Robbery/Assault/Trafficking/etc.) so he can see the internal workings of law enforcement first hand. He would get to see how the CSI/Detectives work in tracking down the perpetrator and then how LEO interacts with criminals and he can have an in depth conversation with them as he is being driven downtown. Then he gets to see the inner workings of the jail system as well as the the judicial system from both the prosecution as well as the defense side. Then he will get to experience the inner working of the guards, parole board/officers and wardens in prison. Once he is out in 5 to 20 years (based on good behavior) and gets his record expunged, he can make an educated decision on which part of law enforcement was most interesting and best suited for him.

My experience is that kids these days don't put as much commitment into deciding what they want to do for the rest of their lives.

many pd's require a college degree regardless of military service. I know Arlington is that way.

I understand. I just have a "package" that needs to be picked up in Laredo and delivered to Lewisville 'for a friend' and thought I could help him out. wink

What is the logic in that policy? A cop should be smart, deal with stress well and have the ability to think on his/her feet but who cares if they are good at calculus.
