Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago, DC/North East.

Places I would not live in the state of Texas: Port Arthur, Waco, and Austin.

There is a distinctive nasty smell when you are at the border waiting to cross over. A smell I will never forget. It is the exact same smell I smell when I go into to Houston. It is like there is no sewer system.

Very sheltered indeed . Houston still blows man ,to much goin on ,traffic ,humidity , ace holes ... just dont understand why some one would specifically choose to live there when you could live out in a peaceful quite rural area. If Houston is your bread and butter and its where you make all your money then fine . But you dont have to live there I like some of the surrounding areas like Conroe and magnolia and a few others . Woods and lakes

For me Houston is actually my preferred place to live in the country. For what I do for a living I need a large industrial base to have a decent chance of staying somewhere for a long period. If you look at large industrial bases in the south that basically leaves you with Houston, Atlanta, and Dallas. For me Houston is the best option of the three. I'd never actually live inside the belt way, but lots of nice areas outside of Houston like you mention. I lived in Cypress for 3 years. Traffic was rarely an issue as I never got on an interstate. If I did, I was smart about when I did it. It's hot, it's humid, but I don't dig ditches for a living. Plus with a pool, palm trees, and a margarita in your back yard it's not so bad. People are generally nice. Cost of living is low. Close to the coast. Lots of culture. Not bad on the net net.

but drinks are much cheaper up there. I spent the summer of 1972 in small town Wis.. Population 250 with 7 bars. Worse places for me would be Jersey (almost anywhere), Ohio (almost any where but especially Cleveland), Gary In., southern Ca., and desert SW.. Almost forgot about where I work. NO WAY I would live in the Grove. I think life expectancy in the Grove is the shortest in the U.S. and maybe the world.

My great uncle owned a bar on the south side of Chicago. He decided to sell it after finding several over of his customers dead of drug overdoses in the alley behind it.
