Nothing fancy. A pack of colored diaper safety pins. Put in the corner of the mouth and they never know it's there. Small hole, no damage. Write the weight down per the color of the pin.

TH Marine with the balance beam is a good way to go. You don't have to worry about a balance beam running out of battery. Also the clips have loops that go on the beam. Super efficient.

How do you cull your fish, go shoulder deep in the well and chase all 5 around until you happen to catch the right one?

For smallmouth yes it does, they have problems with the conservation clips but do fine with the old piercing style.

I hear people saying all the time that the non piercing clips killed their fish, I don't believe it. I'm definitely not an expert, I just don't think that is what's killing their fish. Maybe I am wrong. A guy today said at our club meeting that the TH Marine clips just killed three of his fish. I've been using them for well over a year and a half, never had a fish die. My son and I don't fish a lot of tournaments like some do but we've had five fish in the live well in the middle of the summer or Spring all day long on numerous occasions. We use additives, I clean out my live wells, I clean out the inline screen filter, etc. to do everything I can to help the fish.

Ive never seen any small mouth die at the tourneys I attend in south dakota and everyone is using non piercing.

Its a well known issue on the great lakes, cal-coast even modified the design of their clip to address this it. The way they prop open the mouth seems to cause the problem, its worse on the smaller fish.

Interesting since I have the old larger cal coast and so did two other club members this year with no issues, maybe we arent having issues because were small mouth fishing in the spring and its chilly up there..

No, I have long arms. Not difficult.

I use the Cal Coast 2.0. They hold very well and the fish don't seem to mind them.
Any of the "conservation" clips require proper installation to work correctly. A little care to get them positioned correctly on the jaw goes a long way.
