I use a rail road spike weight, with 4 inch or 6 inch pool yellow noddle from walmart, with 1 inch PVC the RR spike fits in it. I use #15 0r 18 I think nylon twin from WAlmart also. the float is about 16 to 18 inches so I can see it. The PVC is 24 inches long. I wind the line up on the pvc without the float. drill a hole in PVC at float to tie twine to. Roll about 25 to 30 feet of twine on PVC. get it at depth I want I tie two 1/2 hitches on end of PVC at the water line away from the float. This keeps line from rolling off. I don't use weights in PVC or anything else. Also I only use one hook that way I have less mess to straiten. If you are fishing after dark I put reflective tape on PVC on top of float when I can see it.
Good luck tight lines.

The one Pound coated barbells they sell at academy are kind to the boat if you have fiberglass. I use tarline (cheap) for the mainline and 50 lb mono and swivels for drops. I go a little over twenty feet with two hooks one high and one about midway. Works very well for recreational jugging.

I made 10 jug lines a few years back. I used 1 1/2" PVC pipe about 24" long and capped both ends for the jugs. Tie a piece of pool noodle around the top end for visibility. I used stainless eye hooks in the bottom end of the jugs to tie the main line. For anchors I took some plastic 11 oz Folgers coffee cans and filled them 1/2 full of cement, then took about 5 links of heavy plastic chain and pushed into the cement leaving 1 1/2 links exposed to tie the main line. The plastic coffee cans are easy on your hands and your boat. I started out tying three swivels, leaders and hooks to each line but quickly learned catfish will make a mess of that in a hurry. Now I only use 1 or 2 hooks, preferable 5/0 Kahle hooks.
If I remember right I spent about $30 making 10 jug lines, so reasonably inexpensive.
