Interesting this thread continues as I was involved in some of the conversation. In answering the original question at least on my lake there is an authority who placed the buoys and we homeowners petitioned and got them to move the buoys. We only hoped that less wake activity may save against damage along the shore as we are pretty protected from the wind. But there is no lake authority who polices the no-wake zones though twenty years ago I was "pulled over" on Lake Tyler for running on plane through a no wake zone. It is simply a request for courtesy to go slow. I think often bass fishermen are in such a hurry to move from this spot to that spot it is hard to travel at idle for two to three hundred yard stretches. That is especially the case in tournaments.
If I thought the buoys were placed by homeowners rather than a lake authority I'd likely be less inclined to go slow but would probably still grudgingly idle along. It's kind of like a sign that conveys to not cross the southern border. It seems many pay no attention to that either.

When I am on plane my bass boat puts out a very small wake. Not sure how that would do any damage. No different than a small wave on a 5-7 mph windy day. Off plane, I would have to idle at the slowest the boat would travel to put out the same small wake as I would on plane. I was also told on the lake I fish that if the no wake buoys are not numbered (permitted I guess) they are not a legal buoy that will be enforced. Never seen a number on a buoy. In a lot of cases its a safety (speed) issue not a wake problem. Bridges, ramps, narrow water and the like. Unsrurprisingly i havent heard back from txpwd (if anyone actually cared for an answer to the op lol). Might try the city/county or whoever.

Yes, since the buoys were moved 895 boats have come up the cove while I've watched and 671.25 paid no attention to the no wake buoy. I assume the same average when I've not been watching but I might be wrong.

I have seen homeowners put them out before. I always try and be courteous to no wake markers but if its not a marker placed by the governing entity of that lake Its just a suggestion.
