I have vaults on my 2012 trailer. Had one rear seal go out in early 2016 and another about 6 months later. At that time i just went ahead and reworked the other two that had not yet failed. They are good but they will absolutely fail at some point. Nothing is maintenance free in my opinion.

It's not necessary to pack the bearings. The zerk on the end of the spindle leads to the inner bearing first then comes out the outer bearing. Essentially you are pushing grease through both bearings. I've trailered my boat for 20 years now. Bearings are only looked at when it's time for new shoes.

not sure on leaf springs

Leaf springs are cheap. At a minimum have the one that drug replaced. Otherwise you could be in the same boat (no pun intended) next time you hit a bump if you cracked that thing. Happened to me recently.

Yep. Had one break in college on my single axle Nitro. Tire slammed into the fender and locked up and produced as much smoke as a Kyle Busch Burnout. Had it not stayed against that fender there is no telling what all would have been destroyed including my engine.

Something else to remember is that many of the trailer tires are only rated for 65 MPH! OMG

You have better luck than me. I had a one year old McClain trailer( I bought it new), have a bearing failure.

When I read these trailer topics , I always think I am not doing enough .
I have bearing buddies , and I was told by a trailer shop that if any water at all gets in the "bearing area" it will sit there , at the bottom of the bearings , rusting up that location , causing a future failure .
The idea with bearing buddies ( as explained to me ) ----every time you drive to the lake , your grease heats up and liquefies , before dropping into the water , fill the void from the grease being hot , with a little extra grease to ensure no water gets in .
Secondly , I use a Infrared heat gun ( $25 on Amazon ) and I take a heat reading on the hub's and the sidewalls going to the lake and coming home ---hopefully this should be an early indicator to something heating up and failing ?? Thoughts ?????

Ive never understood the idea of adding grease to buddy bearings. The idea behind buddy bearings is pressure. When you install, you fill everything up with grease until the outer edge of the buddy bearing starts moving out, resulting in pressure on the hub. In theory, the positive pressure does not allow water to enter once submerged. Now if you pump a little grease in to that buddy bearing every trip, it seems it would eventually blow out the rear seal, and now you do need to add it all the time, or replace the seal. I personally set it and forget it until its time for the next packing.

I have a 2003 Ranger. This probably sounds stupid but I dont see any way to add grease to the bearings. They seem to be fully enclosed with no grease insert of any kind. What type of wheel bearings do I have?

The guys always adding grease are the ones most likely to have problems. Add grease=blow out seal= bye bye bearing. I have not added grease in years.

I have a 2011 trailer with Vaults on it. This past Saturday I noticed the rear wheel leaning out when I pulled up out of the ramp, limped home on 3 wheels, broke it down and saw that it had apparently been out a while and I had not a single bearing roller left and some wear on the spindle. Instead of attempting to put the vault system back in I carried it back to the dealer. I figured it would be cheaper than me messing it up and having to do it a second time, or having to take it in to be done at the delaer after a failed attempt by me! ALSO, Vaults only have a 5 year warranty unless the owner pays $50 extra to extend it to 10! AND they are only warranted to the original owner of the trailer, it's not transferable... This came from UFP themselves when I called about mine failing!

I think that is the cool hub. It has oil or grease that turns to oil when heated then turns back to grease when cooled. Something like that.

You should have a hex head threaded plug in the hub. Pull the wheel, drain the oil, and fill it back up. I think its 90 weight but read your manual. I ran a 2002 Ranger 10 years and never lost a bearing but I changed the fluid every couple years.
