Technology has been increasing every decade since the 1960's, and one could have raised your question every decade. I'll tell you what impact technology and improved fishing methods had on me: I stopped keeping everything I could legally keep. I was filling up my freezer and had way more fish than I knew what to do with. So, I asked myself, "Why do I keep all these fish - who likes cleaning them all anyway?" It's our instinct to bring home our "catch" and share our results with friends and family. Well, I decided all I really need to do, unless I want to have a fish fry that day or give the fish to someone who wants them, is to just keep track of what I caught and release the fish. So, I can report my results, with some pictures hopefully, and have a record of my catch for future reference. Wow, this has saved me from cleaning a ton of fish and does not reduce the fish population, which was the motive for the question you raised. Hopefully, as anglers get more and more proficient at catching fish, they will move to keeping track of their "catch" but release the fish.

I use to be the same, keep as many as legal; cause you never knew when you would run up on a big school again. Now I just keep what I know I will use in the next few days. I smash the barbs on my hooks just so I can do the least harm and If I loose a few during the day due to my barbless hooks, no one seems to care.

Great policy on just keeping what you need. I used to do the same. Now that I don't hardly keep any fish, my trips are much more enjoyable. Cleaning fish is hard work. I fish to enjoy catching them and being on the water.

One 10-pounder is better than ten 1-pounders; but 100 1-pounders is ok too!
