I use rod socks.

Tried to remove the tubes from my Ranger because it was a huge PITA.....so I left them in

Rod socks all the way, I have an older and smaller boat, never had tubes and boat is too small. If you got more than one rod in your box you need socks or expect to pull them all out at the same time and go through them. I have cheap ones and the ends to poke through so when they do that my broke a$$ gets the duck tape out and back fishing.
