Got a call from Cliff at Texas Boat World Friday. My new Ranger currently in production was supposed to have a mercury Pro XS on it, however the new four strokes are available in the next few days. Curious everybody thoughts, take the old two or the new four stroke? I have to make up my mind by tomorrow.

It's a gamble either way. If the early models are like every early model motor they will get a bad rap and be hard to resell. On the other hand if they somehow change that trend it will be a hit. You won't be able to go by the numbers because the pro xs is going away and the sho seems to be hard to get, add that to all the sponsorships and it will appear like the motor is wildly popular when it might just be the only choice for some people to get a motor

I don't think you can ever go wrong with a 4 stroke. I have a SHO and it's night and day better than any 2 stroke I've had. Mercury has had 4 strokes out for awhile now so I wouldn't worry about getting a white elephant. I would imagine their engineers are as good as anyone else's.

Pro XS

Rationale #1 - even with a warranty on the new motor, why take a chance on a new model? Hassle factor not worth it to me.
Rationale #2 - there's nothing like the smell of 2 stroke in the morning air

Its been so nice not to have to buy 2 stroke oil. I put Around 150 hours a year on my boats and went through a ton of oil

I would not want to be one of the first to run one. Just like the SHO. Lots of motors blown in that first series.

Somebody had one at the last Bass Champs on Rayburn. It looked sharp! It wasn't as big as the Verado. I would like to see how it performs. If I had the opportunity I would have one on my new boat. (Personal preference!) I have been running 4 Stroke and no oil per tank of gas is NICE! But time will tell about the new Merc!
