I don't think you can ever go wrong with a 4 stroke. I have a SHO and it's night and day better than any 2 stroke I've had. Mercury has had 4 strokes out for awhile now so I wouldn't worry about getting a white elephant. I would imagine their engineers are as good as anyone else's. X2,..no oil to add, probably more resale value. Any problems they will be right on it,..!!!

I use no more oil in my 250 Pro XS than I would changing the oil in a 4 stroke. I'm actually quite surprised how little oil I use.

I would not want to be one of the first to run one. Just like the SHO. Lots of motors blown in that first series. No way I would not be a guinea pig, first pick would be a SHO but since there's a shortage I would definitely go Pro XS.

.....I think I have to take the new 4 stroke. Been talking to everybody that has any knowledge on it, same weight, supposed to be super strong, I'd be completely bummed if I took the Pro XS and the new ones are as bad as they are saying they are going to be. If they have a few bugs, I have all summer to deal with them, but it isn't like Merc is new to the 4 stroke game, they have been making the Verado's for several years, and they have been making the best 4 stroke inboards around for quite some time. I hear they put it in an 8 cylinder to produce horsepower with less "work", if you will, from the bigger block, 4.6L (is what I hear). Aluminum, super light for an engine of it's size (within +/- 30 lbs of Pro XS), also hear crazy good mpg... think this is a chance worth taking!

The Mercury roll out for the new V8 four strokes is on May 18th. The 175-225 are supposed to start shipping in May sometime but the larger motors, who knows? They have not yet announced the 250 four stroke yet. But yes, I would like to have the four stroke before the 2 stroke unless absolute top end was important. Not saying the new Mercury won't be able to match the 2 stroke but we won't know for sure until Mercury announces it and shows its numbers. This is what the new V6 Mercs in 175 to 225 look like. There are no pics of the V8's around that I know of.

I have been very curious as to why Merc would stop the new four-stroke line at 225 hp. So the new 225 Merc is 3.4 liters. If they build a V8 on the same cylinder bore it would be about 4.6 liters. I am intrigued but still doubtful.
