Stopped in at Woody's in Centerville over the weekend. There was guy towing a Triton TR21 with a 150 hp. Johnson Venom motor on it. IMO, that boat was terribly under-powered. Why would someone do that? Older motor off a previous boat and a new hull? Seems like engine life would be seriously reduced trying to push that Triton.

Desperate times? Maybe he didn't have choice, or that was best one given his circumstances...do what ya gotta do to stay on the water.

Maybe he wanted to know what it was like to ride in a Ranger?

Could have been several scenarios. The one I would think best is that he had an older, smaller Stratos with the 150 on it. He probably had the rig paid for and hit a stump and totaled out the hull. Insurance co paid for the hull but not the motor. He liked Earl Bentz's products so when he replaced his Stratos, he bought a used Triton, maybe??

I actually saw one for sale like this... Older Triton, 21 foot with an Evinrude 150 on it. Single axle trailer too.. Couldn't make it make sense in my head.

Was it an older boat? BASS lifted the 150HP rule in 1997, about the same time that Triton started.
Could've been built for a sponsored pro at or before the rule change. I remember a number of them runninng Stratos 201s or Ranger 487s with 150HP outboards back in the day.

Probably a safer idea than what I used to have, a 14ft jon boat with a 50 hp merc. Man that thing was squrilly when you slid it around a corner at WOT grin

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Its really just a # on the side, the 150's back in the 80's are closer in speed to a modern 200/225 than you would think.

Used to run a 201 stratos with a 150hp evinrude intruder for bass and federation rules...Boat would run right at 60..Biggest deal was the hole shot that took a while to get up lol

There was a 17 or 18 foot nitro for sale a while back that had a 25 merc on the back. He definitely wasn't in a hurry. I think the add said it would do 10 mph.

A lot of the early TR21's had 150's on them, and they still ran 60 or better. Bigger motor meant you had to DRIVE them, and a lot of guys had no clue how to deal with that little pad. I remember the first time I got in a triton, I thought it was going to flip over when we came off pad.
