I'm pretty sure deep down you knew what people were going to tell you. All you have to do is reverse the situation. Even if you would have told him you didn't need his money for a replacement you would know he was a stand-up guy.

One of my best friends and fishing partner broke a $400 jig rod of mine swinging a fish in a few years ago, I shrugged it off. But, he ordered me a new one and he did not have to do that. It spoke for his character, IMO...

I've had buddies break my stuff plenty of times and I don't expect anything unless they were being intentionally careless. It's part of the game. If it was a normal hookset the rod was obviously damaged.
That said, the polite thing to do would be to at least offer up the money. If he takes you up on it I'd probably find a new buddy.

Absolutely. Offer an exact rod, or a similar one. Let him choose.
On average, your heart beats 100,000 times a day. One day, one of those heartbeats will be your last. Then what?

If it caused you to lose a double digit you should have thrown the broken rod, reel, and him over the side.

It probably was no fault of yours that it broke.
The right thing to do it offer to pay for it regardless. This. And if he is a reasonable guy, he wouldn't accept any money, since he would understand it wasn't your fault. Now, if you did the silverback gorilla swing hookset, then maybe you did cause it to shatter. But, I doubt it. Did you catch the fish? No gorilla like hookset... but yes I did get the fish, was like a 3 pound bass, nothing that should have broken the rod... I have no issue paying for the rod under warranty, Ive already been looking for a shop that has one.

That is why when my stuff is down, I don't borrow because it may just be it's time to break but if I am using it then I am responsible. I'd have told him on the spot that I would replace it.
I spilled some sure on a friend's new boat seat. I knew it would have away but I offered to buy him a new seat.

Order a replacement rod from Tackle Warehouse (or wherever) to replace what you broke and throw in a few of his favorite lures for letting you use it in the first place.

Cheap rod or it sounds like it had already been stepped on in the past. Either way though, you borrowed it, you broke it, you replace it. If under warranty then no worries. I wouldnt expect someone to buy me a new one, especially a friend, but I would expect them to offer.. I have so many I would say just buy me a beer and we will call it good.
