Do you hang up more often? Like most things its a personal opinion. I am not bending out hooks on mine but others may have luck. Anything 70% and above landing ratio on a frog is stout. Even the best frog fishermen lose quite a few.

Once in a while but not very often will I hang up. Say I throw over a log or limb, I reel up to it and give a short sharp jerk, just enough to pop it over and have in sitting in the strike zone, let sit and sit and sit. Another thing I do is add a snap ring and trim an inch off the legs/skirt, it gives it more action. Presentation is key with any top water bait. I fish all of my top water baits sloooow. I can't tell you the last time I lost a fish on a frog. The fellas in our club started calling me Topwater many years ago for reason, I earned it.

This year I have drastically improved my hook up ratio on frogs (and all topwater baits) by doing one simple thing.
Fish the frog in the dark, real dark....and look away while retrieving.
When you feel it pull, pull back hard.
It works to train your reaction to feel the bite, not see the blow up and yank.

I use spro almost exclusively.... like others said, hook set right now, braid, heavy/fast rod.... I do bend my hooks out a very small amount

If you are missing fish one of two things is probably happening. 1. The fish just missed. Bass aren't perfect predators. Sometimes they miss, sometimes their angle of attack is just off. Not much you can do here, but if this is happening a bunch slow down a little. 2. You are getting bit by small fish. Small fish, say 2lbs and under are going to hit a frog a whole lot differently than a larger fish. the small fish is going to "process" the prey. That means they hit it, take it under, then work it around in their mouth to get it oriented correctly before they swallow it. If you set the hook early on small bass there is a very good chance you'll miss it because they have the bait only partially in their mouth and sideways. For small fish it's best to wait. 2 maybe 3 seconds. For larger fish, they should swallow the bait whole and you want to set the hook right away or you risk them spitting it out by waiting too long.

So my answer on when to set the hook? It depends. If you are on small fish, wait. If you are on bigger fish or have a good possibility of a bigger fish, I say swing away.

I use the smaller spro frog, 50 lb braid and heavy 7'3" Daiwa Tatula. Set the hook soon as he hits it. I loose very few fish.

Let them eat it, 65 lb braid, stout rod, tweak all the hooks out just a tiny bit WIDER, but still not enough to snag moss..
