Walked into Newman's bottom yesterday afternoon and fished from 1:30 to 4:30. There were about 35 cars there. I started below the bridge in my favorite spot but only caught 2. So I headed upstream and that was the right move. I caught 35 plus in 2 spots.

I went back to Newman's this morning. I arrived at 5:45 AM and there were already 8 or 9 cars there. I headed downstream to my favorite spot but there were already 2 people fishing in the spot. So once again I headed upstream to get away from the crowd. I ended up catching 38. The fishing came to a crawl by 9:30 when the sun got up in the sky. I miss those cloudy days.

One thing that has become apparent is that some days it is best to find some spots that are experiencing less fishing pressure in order to be successful. It was the same way on Memorial day when I went out with Alan and Jacob.

When I got back to the parking lot I talked to Adam and a couple other game wardens. Adam said he counted 60 cars there and 2 more had arrived since he got there. Most people have at least 2 people per car so there were over 100 people fishing there today. There were 15 cars at Nails creek and 4 at Cedar creek.

I believe we are on the back side of the run now. I didn't see any spawning this morning and caught far less females.

Thanks for the excellent report, J-Moe. I may fish closer to home tomorrow. I don't really want to make the 3 hour round trip drive only to fight crowds. I can do that just fine here in Austin. roflmao

Yesterday I was under alot of pressure. I have been bragging about how good the fishing has been in the creeks to my friend Jack that he decided to make the 2 1/2 drive from Lake Jackson area and come up. So we got to Newman's Bottom at 600am and there was probably 10 cars there already. We hauled [censored] to get to my favorite spot and there was someone already there. So we fished around the area at a few other holes and we ended up catching about 10 each then about 830am it just stopped. I told my friend that maybe we should go towards the lake. We carried our stuff to and across the bridge and looked down the creek. There was ALOT of people. I said to my friend we need to get away from the crowds. So we headed back towards Irwin bridge. When we were walking I noticed the sun was blaring. I told my friend we need to fish the shadows. It really paid off. The first spot we hit and fished the shadow there was people to the left and right of us not catching and we caught 6 back to back. We decided to move to another shadow spot and we caught 10. We moved again to the next shadow spot and caught another 10. We finally hot our limit around 1245pm. After that we just enjoyed catching fish just for fun. It was a good day all in all just had to work for it.

Nice report, JonL. And congrats on the nice catch. I'll bet you were exhausted at the end of the day. grin

Thanks Jsinn. Yes I was very tired. Luckily I had a cart to carry those 50 fish plus gear out. Although dragging the cart down the creeks can be tiring due to all the brush. I got home about 615pm and took a shower and laid down at 700 and slept through the night.

The wife, son, and I made it out.

We were only around the creek for about 45 minutes late in the day but I managed 2. One was a nice fat female.

I lost 2 rattle traps and a rooster tail but it was worth it.

Now I gotta go do some work on my fillet knife. I should've just broken out the electric knife even though it was only 2. Those rib cages are hard on knives...

Gotta wonder how many lures are in the yegua? Haha.

For sure. I saw many more just sitting in tree limbs so I'm not alone.

I just put the Shimano Sienna 1000 with 4 lbs. test that I have for sunfish/crappie fishing on a 6' medium action rod I have and I'm glad I did because it made breaking the lure off easier. The first fish I was casting off one of the drop offs down to the creek and I just had to grab the line and lift the fish up 8 feet or so. It made me a little nervous but like I said, better to able to break off a stuck lure than clip a bunch of line or break a rod tip.
