Have any of you used braid with shallow running crank baits? I use 30LB power pro main line with a 3-4ft mono leader. For leader material I use 12-15lb big game. I join the two lines with a LOCKED FG knot or a blood knot. Especially when I using a rod with micro guides, Micro guides really put a beating on joining knots when your reeling the knot through the guides all day long. Hope this helps! Do you notice a loss in casting distance with the knot going out through the guides? Do you seal your knots with something like this? [img:left] https://cdn3.volusion.com/dajky.aoemy/v/vspfiles/photos/loon-uv-knot-sense-2.jpg?1429022035[/img] I dont not seal my joining knots, and I havent really noticed any difference in my casting distance. I have had moments where I didnt have time to retie my leader knot on my deep cranking set up. My leader was so short I didnt need to Reel the joining knot through my guides in order to make a cast. The casting distance was about the same. But that is some pretty interesting stuff. I may have to try it out... i could see it maybe helping the joining knot slide through the guides a little better.

I was kinda forced to use braid with larger squarebills on a couple of private lakes due to big bass and very heavy cover. Seemed to work ok but I did better with a bit softer rod for that situation to keep hooks from straightening out or pulling out. All those suggestions above seem reasonable for other applications.

I tried braid for all 4 depths of CBs once, didn't like it at all, so I use McCoys Mean Green for all CB applications. I like the way it gives during runs, no memory to speak of, stronger than an ox per lb tests and casts like a dream, so I keep using it for CBs, primarily, but it is my main line for everything but C-rigs, too. Hope this helps. OH, I like to play a hooked fish vs. just reeling them in and flipping them in the boat, but that just may be me, dunno. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I see no reason in having a leader for fast moving baits. Just another place for failure imo.

Me too Have any of you used braid with shallow running crank baits? nope, I like a little stretch in my line.
I love the smell of two stroke in the morning.

I switched to braid for shallow running crankbait around 2003 when fishing Lake Grapevine.
It was pretty common to catch 100 bass per day with two guys in a boat, and some were dinks.
For me I could feel the fish fighting better.

I see no reason in having a leader for fast moving baits. Just another place for failure imo. That's what I was going to ask. Why use a leader on a moving bait unless you are getting the hooks tangled in the braid. Other than that I see no reason to use a leader if you are using a rod designed for throwing crank baits.

Theres no reason to use anything but mono. Your contradicting yourselves, you want a rod with flex when using a crank bait, why do you think you need line that has no stretch? Waist of money.

With braid, you can feel what the lure is doing on the bottom--easier to feel where the structure and/or cover changes. Easier to feel bites. Better hook set at long distances
Mono helps prevent ripping the hooks out and gives the fish some stretch close to the boat
It's all personal preference. Some pros prefer deep cranking with a soft, parabolic rod while others prefer the same rod they use for Trig.
What you are fishing from is also a factor. Fishing from the bank or a dock you have the best leverage--allows you to use the softest of rods when cranking
Fishing from a float tube you have the least leverage--every time you set the hook from a float tube, you move toward the fish

David Fritts ALWAYS said to use the lowest stretch line you can for crank baits and now he uses braid. He is pretty good at using crank baits as I recall.
