I was just curious. Not sure what might be used.

I have never done it, my grandfather used to take a handful of white rice and throw it in the water
over where we would fish for crappie, he said it would stir them up,....we always caught fish..

If you're going to sit in one spot for awhile, that might work. I've heard two schools of thought on this.
1) Use something like corn meal, crushed crackers, rice ext to get the minnows feeding. That in turn may make the crappie feed. Course there has to be some minnows around.
2) Use minnows or shad cut in pieces length wise. Throw a few in to stimulate the crappie, if there are any there. Dropping a few live minnows in the water may get the crappie feeding also.

Although I�ve never tried this, I saw an old timer with a 1 gallon glass canning jar with holes poked in the lid. He would put four or five minnows in the jar and sink it to the depth he was going to fish. He claimed the jar would be almost invisible to the fish and the Crappie would try to eat the minnows but couldn�t get to them which would drive them nuts. It�s seem to work well for him.

The minnow jar is viable. I�ve heard of it before.

Dad used the minnow in the jar.

He also would throw a handful of pea gravel once in awhile. Says it sounds like crappie feeding on shad near the surface.

Has anyone Heard of Hanging a chum bag? If so. What was in it? I have heard for catfishing but not for crappie.

All that will do is bring in fish other than crappie.

Well, bring in bait fish and crappie will follow.

Heard about the bag when I was like 14, at Lake Palestine. Was told to put dog food in it and fish with minnows. So I did. I caught a Drum. So I went catfishing.

Wouldn't you need to have something that would devolve very slow for best results? You wouldn't want to put something out that would be gone in 10 minutes.

get u a 5 gallon bucket with a lid, poke small hole in lid. fill halfway with crushed corn (chicken scratch). fill to an inch from top with water. let sit in sun a couple weeks. It will stick and get slimy. sink the whole bucket with cinder blocks near a favorite fishing hole. you will catch crappie for many trips, because the slime oozing out of the bucket attracts baitfish. we used to bait out holes on stillhouse for night fishing and caught thoudsands of crappie doing this. the key
is, knowing that baitfish come into an area at certain times,
the bait buckets of chum
are to keep them there longer. most feeding by gamefish is done at night, and they know where the baitfish go at night , following and herding them to feast on them. that is why as soon as darkness hits, you wont catch crappi on a brushpile, they leave and join the other gamefish to go into coves and flats and feed.

Minnows in a jar do work; used it many times in winter under docks. Hung the jar about 4 ft. I left the jar hanging for a week at a time and then changed minnows. Put about 10 in the jar each time. The schools of crappie that come along at night will fixate on the minnows. Started fishing at daylight and the crappie would hit like a bass when you lowered a minnow down.
