If the skeg wasn't on these engines,once that boat got halfway on plane, the stern will lift and the entire stern will take off to the starboard side and prop walk right past the bow. Sure it does provide a strike protection, but that was not it's intended purpose. The prop walking up and out to the starboard side with right-hand rotation gc's and will literally swap ends with the bow, over and over till you lift the throttle.

Break a skeg off clean with the gearcase bullet with much speed at all and the tail is coming around the starboard side hard enough to put you in a tail spin and depending on water conditions and other things, may barrel roll as you lift out of the throttle.
