Lose weight in most cases. I'm 6'2 and 210, I snore pretty bad. At 250 I had apnea but went away when I lost weight, still snore pretty bad. I sleep with a machine when I am home, but not traveling with my job. I could stand to loose 15 pounds, maybe 20 at the most.

I one side of my nose doesn't good, deviated (sp) whatever it is. Can't spell it.

Look into the smile rx website. They make an appliance for sleep apnea. I have had quite a few pts lately that rave about it. A little expensive from what I hear, but being an RN I would try to avoid that type surgery at all costs

Myth. I lost 60 lbs and it started up. Usually weight does factor in but not always. Skinny people have it also.
I have been told the surgery is dangerous.

I went to my ENT doctor today to see what options are out there... turns out I have a deviated septum that is causing a 50% blockage, as well as swollen turbinates...he said my the nasal passages are about about 80% restricted...and can fix me up with a pretty common day surgery.

My son had his nose broken, uvula trimmed, tonsils, & adenoids removed. No more sleep apnea. I have no problems with the machine. In fact I can�t sleep without it.

Weight can be a factor, but there are folks rail thin with the condition.

I use s full face mask. It works great and I am a bipap patient.

Getting a decent nights sleep has been great for me. I used to wake up so tired. Struggled to get to sleep, then up a couple of times during the night. No more.

It is a common procedure, that part is true, but simple it's not. In fact it quite dangerous in a morbidly obese person. Many pts I've taken care of say they've got 2-3 years of relief then problem starts all over again. Have you checked the smile rx website that I suggested earlier? A simple appliance is no danger at all.

yep. had it since my air force days and I definitely wasn't fat.

How do you know he is telling the truth or just telling you that?

I'd be cautious. Doctor wants money and nothing else. Just remember that. He has a large house he needs to pay for. Doctor appointments don't pay the mortgage.

Don't you think for the millions of CPAP users more would have this surgery? It sounds like your doctor went the the same school as the one I went too.....Scam School. Just my opinion.

You breathe through your mouth or nose? That condition is a nose condition.

Try nasal strips. Open that nose up. Save the money.

Try nasal strips. Open that nose up. Until I got a CPAP I didn't realize I was a mouth breather..my nose is usually stopped up feeling ...and the CPAP has exposed that fact even more. When I lay down at night it's tough to get air in through my nose even with positive pressure...and it's even more of a struggle to exhale through my nose against positive pressure.. I do wear two nasal strips and that helps.. the only way I can breathe clearly is with a nasal decongestant, and they don't last all night and I don't like them.

I have always hated my cpap. Then I got a Phillips resperonics dreamwear mask. Very comfortable. If there is such a thing. Amazon has them. Good luck. JD
