What's a restaurant? I dine out at the drive thru windows, Brookshires and Walmart delis. McDonald's for a sausage cheese biscuit and hash browns, Sonic for cheeseburger and fries, D Q for milkshakes and chicken finger baskets, KFC for the $5 Fillup, Brookshires for fried chicken and an occasional side of ribs.
There is a reason. I usually ear alone and hate along up space in a restaurant. I'm sure your doctor's love you

I throw out a Franklin or two most of the time! Unless it's an expensive place, then I donate at least 500 to their favorite charity. We had a regular at one of our stores who would pay with a 100 and not want change every time he came in. Now his bill was usually 12 bucks. He owns a large company and I would think most all of you go there pretty regular like. The girls raced to his table lol.

I'm not sure when 20% became the norm. It's always been 15%. Who decided it should increase? It's not like a percentage is subject to inflation. The whole concept is nonsense. Pay your people an appropriate wage and increase the price of my food as needed. Let capitalism do it's thing and we will vote with our pocket books on what is and isn't an acceptable price.
Anyway, to answer the question, I usually run the math on 15% and then add a little extra on. I probably averages out to 18%.

Gotta keep it real around here, some of y'all are crazy. On average, this is how I feel when I dine out. The waiters complaining about bigger tips are on the same level as fast food people wanting to make $15/hr.
High School drop out makes my sandwich at Jersey Mikes and the screen prompts me to tip. No, thanks for doing your GD job.
Waiter walks up to my table at cheap meal place or local taqueria, takes my order right away, brings out my ice tea, then food, eat and I'm gone. 10%
Normal sit down place, multiple refills, appetizers and food, we're there for about 30-45 minutes - 15%
Nice dinner place, bottle of wine, wife can't make up her mind, ask for food suggestions, given an actual good food suggestion, prompt service, waiter did a great job being a waiter. 20%
I once got the best service of my life at Wildfish Grille. 50% in cash.
If a meal gets comped, I'll tip the above plus the cost of the meal as long as it comes out right.

15-20% of actual bill before tax, and the rough percentage I choose depends on service. As an ex-waiter, I tip well, and still give 15% at bad to mediocre service. I probably shouldn't.
I usually double the tax, which give me 18+ %, which is my main math choice.

Anyway, to answer the question, I usually run the math on 15% and then add a little extra on. I probably averages out to 18%. Yeah, this. I typically do 10-12% at minimum service places (like Golden Corral or Chinese buffets) & 15-18% at normal restaurants. I reserve 20-25% for really good service, or if it's a place I regularly go to and the server knows/anticipates the quirks of my group. For truly outstanding service, I'll give the waiter/tress a silver half dollar, and make sure the person knows what it is, in addition to the cash tip (because cash tips are usually pooled among multiple employees). I've been known to leave tips in unusual forms, like $2 bills and $1 coins. Special Sonic case: when I'm getting a couple of milkshakes for me & the redhead, I give the carhop a regular half dollar coin. They usually think it's cool.
