That is a good idea. I get the feeling he doesn't know what he is doing. I already paid $900 for "my part" that didn't fix anything.

It sucks for sure. For you and your son. But you did buy AS IS. Probably should have taken a longer test drive and had a mechanic on your choice look it over. Problem with buying used. I have before and gotten the 30/30 warranty. 30ft or 30 seconds. whichever comes first.
Sounds like the dealer has tried, most wouldn't.

id say its probably yours for keeps, post up what ya got & maybe somebody has a fix...I have a jeep cherokee that doesn't want to run when it gets hot, googled it & the fix was to insulate the fuel line which runs very close to exhaust manifold causing fuel to vapor lock

I'd say it's a relevant question. You call any decent mechanic, you think they won't ask you the same question? Yes, they will.

I wasn't asking for a fix. I'm asking if I have any legal power on an as-is buy.

That stinks man. I don't think you have any recourse on an as-is purchase. Sounds like the dealer has tried to go out of his way to help. But there's a good chance this is why someone traded it in unfortunately. No telling how much money they threw at the problem before they took whatever they could get in trade and bought something else.

Not starting and leaking oil are not symptoms that are usually linked. Fuel, ignition, air problems that would cause a failure to start are not something that would cause an oil leak. Sounds like it could be complicated to me to fix both of them. I'd see if the dealer would take it back if it was me. If not, I'd sell it on my own and find something else.

I wonder if it's a crank sensor or a cam sensor...

Don't know. When it runs, it runs really good. Matter of fact, it's purring like a kitten right now.

Injectors, is there any white smoke at all when it does start?

Why would you not want to know what the problem is?

This thread got me curious, so I did a little reading. While Texas does have a 'lemon law', it does not apply to used vehicles, which surprised me. Generally, buying anything 'as-is' with no warranty at all leaves a buyer with little or no recourse, unless there's fraud or some other problem involved.

Sounds like your seller is being honorable and trying to fix the problem. At the same time, I really do feel your frustration with having his shop so far away from you to attempt getting repairs done. Have you considered asking him to take the vehicle back and apply your money to a different vehicle that he has?

6.0 liter Ford diesel..... barf

PITA to keep running unless a lot of upgrades are done, then they are good.

sounds like possibly the high pressure oil pump.... a certain pressure has to be reached before the injectors will open...
