Why not just cut the rose bush down quite a bit? You should be able to do what is needed without getting poked too much. Rose bushes grow back very quickly.

I had a good friend in high school so allergic to he couldn't walk by it. It would get in his eyes and if I recall in his lungs also. He would swell up like a toad. Dang near killed him in jr high.

Just cut it at ground level and spray roundup around perimeter of bush. I've gotten rid of 2" vines around neglected pecan trees.
