Not a very popular topic here on the TFF. One reply in about 24 hours. Post about automatic guns and it's a reply every 5 minutes for 3 days straight.

It's not that it's not a popular topic. It's just that 99% of us in the OT are fat and lazy and don't visit the fitness section.

It seems like that would address the problem. Banning bump stocks only means the next best thing will be what people get.

You would have to break trigger fingers to prevent someone from rapidly squeezing off shots. I think I could empty a magazine as fast as a bump stock with nothing but my finger.

I have no use for a bumpstock, but I don't think they should be banned, and I'm not sure how much good it would do, because it seems like you can fire a semi-auto in a similar fashion without one. He also had a lot of ammonium and tannerite in his vehicle parked at Mandalay Bay. This guy was a terrorist. I'm tired of giving up rights/conveniences/abilities because terrorists commit horrible acts.
I don't disagree with your last statement. But if modern automatic weapons are illegal to own, then why are devices that make a weapon operate like an automatic weapon not regulated in the same way?

An AR can be bump fired by without any device fairly easily with a little practice...

Easy, you cant stop the guns. There are already too many in circulation and the will be for the next 100 yrs or more. You stop the ammo. all the repeating rounds and you don't allow guns with different ammo to be mass produced. In just 10 yrs it would be very difficult to get if you didn't already have a stash. Crazies that weren't already into guns (shick is most mass shooters) would have a very difficult time getting it and you aren't going to kill more than 5-6 without a semi auto.

One of the great things about the internet is that it promotes the free exchange of information. Lord knows that when the information being provided is how to engage in civil disobedience or riots, the interweb seems to love it. But to suppress knowledge - even knowledge of how to build weapons - is one of the basest wrongs there is.

Yeah, thats it. I can live with the idea that some firearns technology might be illegal to own or use. I dont' like the idea that knowledge itself could be banned.

This is a very good point that I hadn't really considered...

If you ever shot a bump fire contraption you would understand it's not all that great. Under controlled conditions you can burst off a magazine for fun and feel like you are rocking and rolling. Then you put it away and never use again. Banning bump fire devices is certainly not going to make us safer. You can also bump fire without even needing a bump fire stock. You may have the materials at home or just a quick trip to the local hardware store or even Wallyworld.

In watching the videos and reading about the function, it looks like you could use a rifle sling wrapped around your shoulder to accomplish the same thing as the bump stock. I'm not very mechanically minded, so I have no idea if one could even design & build a semiauto that could have a 'governor' limiting maximum rate of fire.

Ok. Not an answer to the question. You can also alter an AR trigger group at home. If automatic weapons are illegal, all of these tricks to make a gun an auto should be illegal as well, including practicing a bump fire.

I will also say that it's difficult to make an argument for bump fire stocks as anything except for a tool that could be used really effectively against a huge crowd of people. They're not nearly accurate enough to be used for hunting or range work or any other normal purpose.

I'm against gun control, but we should be philosophically consistent. However automatic weapons are regulated, tricks to make normal guns operate like automatic guns should be regulated in the same way. If we want to have a conversation about legalizing automatic weapons, that's fine too. It's just illogical to have different standards for guns that are made automatic by the manufacturer versus those that are made automatic by the end-user.

Where the brass? In the photo you only see a very small portion of a whole big, huge room.

I stopped reading after that.

To those who believe bump stocks are fine as-is:

Do you think automatic weapons should be regulated in the same way as bump stocks and AR-15 rifles are regulated now?

Simple, bump fire does not make a firearm fully automatic. A trigger pull is required for each round.

If he was close to the window opening when he fired, plenty of it could have gone out the window as well. My ARs typically ejected at about 2:00, which wouldn't leave any or very little brass in the room.
