Dude nothing. I had three (I'm an old man) and I fell asleep during my last one. Heads up, that's old technology. Odds are it will crack or fail within 10 years. If you can afford it, just get an implant.

I've had a couple of them and nowadays, they're really not that bad as you might think. Worst part about my last one was having my mouth pried open for that length of time.

Several of my old root canals failed, dentist sent me to an endodontist to redo them. They had special equipment and went deeeeeeep. Also used some electrical thing in the canal and made sure they got all the root before they refilled the canal. Only bad part was when the "dead" root wasn't dead when they touched it! realmad

If the root is bad they still have to dig it out before doing an implant.....

Would certainly take your dentist's advice over random guys in the OT. I'm an endodontist (do root canals for a living) and my wife is a periodontist (does implants for a living). There's a time and place for both, and after careful examination, I've talked plenty of people out of my treatment and into pulling their tooth and doing an implant (my wife and I work at different offices, so this would not be to my benefit or hers). But guess what, if my wife had a tooth that could be saved with a root canal or could be replaced with an implant, what do you think she'd choose? A root canal every time. So don't let guys who've never looked in your mouth, nor picked up a book even remotely related to dentistry try and tell you what's best for you. If you want a 2nd opinion go to a different dentist.

Regarding your original question, most of my patients are shocked at how well the procedure goes for them and end up being thankful for modern dentistry. It's come a long ways and that includes the techniques in root canal treatment.

If you are hurting and need a root canal it's a blessing.

Oh yeah what makes you an expert? Just kidding!
I would take his advice. Truth be told, I'm an idiot and don't specialize in anything.
