Went out and fished the lake across from the dam tonight. I only caught 3 bass and a dozen or so bluegill. There were quite a bit of shad spawning on the shore. Surprisingly no white bass and not many lmb in shore feeding on them.

I fished at Yegua Creek park this morning. The bluegill are spawning again. I ended up catching between 40 and 50. A large portion of these were in the 8 to 9 inch range. The white bass started surfacing around 8 AM. They were out of range of my fly rod but there was another fisherman reaching them with a surf rod. He wasn't catching any though as the ones surfacing near the bank looked to be very small. I saw some bigger fish surfacing but they were out of range, even for a surf rod.

Lake Level is 237.35. Over 10 inches of rain is expected this weekend. With this type of rains it would be expected that Brazos will be out of its banks and the COE won't be able to open the gates for several days before the Brazos starts to subside. The lake will possibly swell 8 to 10 feet above normal. That should lead to some good fall and winter fishing both below the dam and in the creeks. Currently the creeks are extremely low and full of duck weed so a good flushing was in order. I pray the flooding is minimized but if it stalls, like some models are projecting this could get ugly like the past 2 years' Memorial day floods.
Normally, the lake will subside about 1/4 ft per day with the gates wide open. So we can expect a month or more of water being released.
Bank fishing has been slow on the lake and I haven't seen much white bass activity. There are still lots of small shad near the banks but the predator fish haven't been feeding on them in shallow water in any numbers. We are dead into the dog days of summer.

Lake isn't going to release any water in near future. Brazos is already backing up and it's going to get worse. ALOT worse. Stay safe Gents. This isn't over yet.

Two epic floods in 2015 and again in 2016 rewrote the story of the lake with lots of new chapters yet to be read. All the parks & creeks were affected but based on this last year of bass fishing the flooding had a bright side.
This current hurricane will very likely push Lake Somerville up to record levels again making it three years in a row.. At the very least we will have high water well into the fall if not the new year.
The lake is up 3 feet in the last 36 hours and the majority of the flood water has yet to arrive. I don't like dire forecasts but this tropical event looks like a major train wreck in the making.
The whole lower Brazos river will be flooded for weeks to come and that means Lake Somerville will hold back any water it can until it breaches the emergency overflow spillway. The only question is how long will the lake take to fill.
Hold on to your hat this is going to be a rough ride..

Yep. Here we go again. They won't be able to release for quite some time. It's gonna get really high again. Pray for Houston and the coastal areas north of corpus.

Weldon Kirk had posted it should hit emergency spillway sometime Tuesday. I blame the rebuilding of Big Creek for this. He started rebuilding last year as we took aflood. Started the rebuild this year and guess what happened? I think the past 3yr floods will see a negative effect this spring. What hybrids we had left and the new stock will majority fallover the spillway. Lake fishing was 'average' at best this year... we will keep seeing it decline.

The road to the dam is closed on both ends. Water has started creeping over the uncontrolled spillway road. The good news is the rate of rise is decreasing. It increased less than a foot in the last 12 hours.
