I agree with Ken as well, a 5.1 to 5.5:1 is ideal for thee brutes. I throw mine on a Dobyns 806, sometimes on the Dobyns 805 CBRM rod, but the rod makes almost as much difference (if it is the wrong rod) as the reel does, sometimes. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

So they seem to contradict a bit but I think I understand:
A 5:1 ish reel has a larger mechanival advantage making it less effort to crank, but you need to turn it faster to keep up with a 7:1 ish
A 7:1 ish you need to crank slower relatively to achieve the same speed, but each turn will be more difficult with the smaller gear and thus wear you out.
Correct for the newbies like me? CORRECT

I like a ice rod with 4 lb fluorocarbon for maximum diving depth. Jk, a 5:1 reel with 12 lb line should do, glass crank rods are good for extreme cranking.

You can still turn the 5:1 slow. They were just saying you can tell it fast and the 7:1 slow to achieve the same speed. I don't try and crank a deep diver fast. They will wear you out. I like the 5:1 as it is much easier on the arms for a long time of casting

I throw a deep crankbait a lot. Probably more than most and there is no way to get a 5 XD to hit the bottom in 20 foot of water. A 6XD and a DD22 are very hard to get that deep by casting them. 18 is about the max actually hit the bottom depth. A 5.1 reel is definitely easier to pull these baits with and a good long crankbait rod is a must.

A dd22 and 10xd are 2 different worlds Yes I got that wrong. I meant 6XD and 5 XD. I always was a crummy proofreader.

If you have trouble getting down to depth try long lining. It's a lot of work but worth it. You can use 2lb test and it won't mean anything if you don't get the bait out there. This method also puts both anglers (if there are 2) on even ground to effectively hit a spot. If your partner can't throw as far as you he is not getting in the strike zone so he is basically wasting his time. You will want a reel that holds more line IMO. I don't think ratio is as big a deal as people make it. As you empty a spool on a cast the ratio of a reel stays the same but your inches of retrieve per turn decreases. An oversized spool decreases this effect. If your only pulling in 12 or 13 inches per turn on an empty spool the bait is not going to get down until you get some line on the spool to increase your retrieve but by then it's to late, you have missed the zone your looking for. There are many schools of thought on this and somewhere in the middle is you answer, your just going to have to do some testing.

I think most would agree he is one of the best anglers in Texas.

Bill D,
I am still using McCoys Mean Green. It's 12 # is close to regular mono's 10 # so, it gets down more than the normal 12 # mono or fluoro. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Thad Rains Thad.. thanks very much for replying to my question. I use 30lb Stren braid, which is the same diameter as 12lb mono and I can get a 6XD down to 15' for sure. I use a short 12lb mono leader for a little shock absorbing. I haven't had that much success deep diving but have caught a few that way. I really like the feel of braid.. just gives me confidence to feel the bottom when it gets there. BD
