I still use 5' 6" pistol grips and catch fish. I own nothing more than 6'6" MH rods and do just fine.

You can make it as simple or complicated as you want. I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't retie all the time, change hooks constantly, or stuff like that. I've got enough rods to do what I want or need to and just go find fish and try to catch them. I do have a good electronics set up to help that out

I think about this all the time. When I first learned to bass fish, I knew how to do two things: Jitterbug on top and a TX rigged lizard, and I fished out of my grandpa's old pontoon boat. I feel like we caught just as many fish back then and spent half the money and 1/4 of the frustrations!

Yes. Remember those 5.5 ft. Lews Speed Sticks well. Threw that spinner bait on them for 10 years. Then moved to the Finwick Gold Wings in same length with pistil grips which I still have. After 20 years of throwing a spinner bait the wrist and elbow gave out. Won a couple of tournaments on the Strike King Little S - crank bait and invested in a set of 6 ft. rods. Then had to slow way down or have surgery and took up the plastic baits which called for 6' 6" rods. Everyone of them was Med. Hevy.. Now look where we are today with rods for every technique, which I have refused to purchase. I am staying with pretty much the same set of 7 ft. Med. Hevy. rods for most applications, with the exception of a few rods won in tournaments that are specific.

I fish 3 baits decent. Spinnerbait, ,zaraspook, and plastic worms and 6\7' spinning rods. 4 types of boat, float tube, water wagon, kayak and a 16'/25 HP jonboat. All is simple stuff but I seem to catch fish well from all. My water wagon is my favorite in a quiet pond. Catch a 5+lb bass on that and it will turn you around. FUN!!!

I liked it when the fish weren't suppose to grow as big (and as smart as they are now) Seems like they were much easier to catch back in the 70's... We were dumb azz kids, and caught fish every trip out, can't say that nowadays.. Justsay'n

Yep. Florida bass grow bigger, but they are also more finicky and harder to catch.

Lakes didn't have the pressure on them that they do now. That's probably the biggest factor I see today as opposed to 20 or 30 years ago. I still have a pistol grip rod that I'm thinking of putting back into the lineup. When I got back into fishing after 10 years off, it took me forever to get used to the new rods. I still use the old faithful lures. Every once in awhile I will try something new like the whopper plopper but usually find the old stuff catches more fish the new stuff catches more fishermen
