Thanks to all for your input. Went with the BIGGER over the BETTER. Looking forward to a big screen to replace Helix 5 and spending some time with David to learn how to use it.

Hebrew 12:1b let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Those pics are much better than my HDS 12 Gen 2 produces. After seeing Chris Webb's HB with the mega imaging that's the next graphs for crappie sled I think. I just wish HB was as easy to use and navigate through as the Lowrance touch was. Talked to a fellow this week who went back to Lowrance for ease of use actually.

Look at Little mans hat on the very tip oh the bill. I believe it says Simply. Clearly. Better.

Humminbird is very easy to navigate....Call me when you are ready and I will hook you up.

That's what it says David! If you can read it through the chocolate pudding stains on his hat! roflmao

He tells me all the time we need the latest and greatest in HB Technology and then spends all his money on nerf guns and fireworks!! bang

I came from HDS 10 Gen 2 to the Helix 12 MEGA. Talking 455 and 800 KHz here to stay in context -- The Humminbird excels in ALL aspects on Side Scan. After using my Helix for a while now I feel like I was using "Side Scan Lite" with the HDS 10 Gen2. I have found the controls easier on the Helix as well. But my HDS was button, not touch. Very intuitive menu system on the Helix.

I also picked up a 360 unit to go with the Helix. Amazing. I call it Smart Bomb Sonar. When you have depth, distance, and directional info for your cast to target, you have no excuses ! grin

That's what I'm talking about! Will have 360 for sure! Prolly won't even have to fish for em then. Just back the boat in the water and open the livewell lid and watch em jump in!! clap

I'm trying to decide myself what to do. My understanding is that the mega technology is great, but is it that much better that you would trade for great deals on the gen 1's? I'm just a weekend fisherman at best so I have to factor that in as well!

Joel, if it were me, I would just get a bigger gen 1 model or maybe an XI5. Detail is only needed to a certain point and the gen 1 models do exactly what is needed to get on fish.

My thoughts about sonar equipment include my desire to find/catch is no less than a pro. Don't see that settling for less should be defined by my status in the fishing world.
Budget restraints would be the only factor.

I'll prolly get shot down, but the main difference I see on the lowrance side is the speed of the processor. And the touch screens are nice. Birds maybe the same maybe not. But for sure the 12 will be easier to see than the 9... JMO
