I run a small engine repair shop in San Antonio. Been in the industry for 20 years. I called ethanol fuel the small engine stimulus plan. We repair close to 4000-6000 small engines a year, mainly outdoor equipment. The majority of carb related repairs are due to ethanol jelly build up. In the winter we go to update seminars and all the small engine manufactures talk about the effects of ethanol on carbureted engines. Now the guys here never having any problems may have EFI or DI motors. I can see why these types of motors would have less issues with ethanol. But just because something has never happened to you, doesn't mean it doesn't exists. Cars go though fuel way faster, very rarely does gas stay in a fuel tank longer then 30 days. The system is pressurized as well.
Here is a fun experiment. Open your garage for ventilation. Put some gas in a open container with a wide mouth, like a measuring cup. Now let a box fan blow on it for about 2 minutes (less humid days require more time). You will see the gas get cloudy, this is moisture from the air being adsorbed by the fuel. Do the same experiment with ethanol free gas, you will see the difference.
BTW, you can get ethanol free gas in San Antonio. Murphy gas station on Pat Booker road and the one in Borne as well. I did small engine repair in highschool... people taking their lawn equipment to the shop to get the carbs cleaned so it would run again has been going on way longer than we have had corn squeezins in our fuel. The industry will blame the quickest easiest thing they can that is not them... yep fuel. It wouldn't work to blame the consumer even though its their fault.

Good read here. Most of it I agree with. Some of it not so much. The real problems come from older engines that were never designed for E10. As for 2 stroke engines there has never been one designed or intended to run more than 10% ethanol. The question is, do you really know what you are pumping into your tank. Lots of data on stations that have sold gas with higher ethanol content and that ain't good for anybody. https://www.westmarine.com/WestAdvisor/Busting-Ethanol-Fuel-Myths

That link seems like a pretty objective view of it.
Don't let your gas sit for extended periods of time and if your going to store it add a stabilizer and close the vent. Again I'm not saying e-10 is the best thing since sliced bread, I'm saying with a little common sense and normal maintenance precautions you should never have a problem.

Not all pumps have exactly 10% ethonal, some have more, some less. There is a simple measuring kit to test it you can buy online. We test our fuel all the time and every now and then we get more the 10% ethonal.
I agree if you take proper precautions you can avoid phase seperation. But with regular gas with out ethonal. You had a lot more wiggle room.

Gas distributors and stations alike will cheat. Ethanol is cheaper than gas because it is govt subsidized(now in the form of tax breaks) so if they can mix a higher percentage of corn with the gas and they sell it for the same price as everybody else then they make a bit more $$$$. Some have been caught at it but it's hard to prove they do it on purpose. Ethanol is blended at the tank farm when they fill the tanker trucks so there possibly can be some malfunction happening at that time whether accidental or on purpose or accidentally on purpose. In any case ethanol contents from discount gas stations have been recorded as high as 20% and more and that's enough to kill a 2 stroke engine in short order. One of those test kits is not a bad idea.
