Its a crying shame too. Maybe, just maybe that will change in the near future. Would be cool to see.

Japan is better than Malaysia Oh without a doubt! Japan makes superior fishing products, especially reels! They're serious about their fishing. Everything that I have owned that has been made in Japan has been a very well built long lasting product.

Reels are so small these days you've got to have little bitty hands to assemble them.

When an American made reel hits the market of the quality and price point of Shimano, Diawa, Lews,.....I will buy it. I buy the best product for the money. If it is made in the US, great. I just cannot spend my hard earned money on an inferior product just because of where it is made.

Maybe they at least get the steel and grease for the reels in the USA? If so then technically it comes from the USA:)

There was a reel made here of the quality of Shimano and priced about the same. It was the Ardent Edge made in Macon Mo. but people wouldn't buy them so they moved the manufacturing across the pond and people will buy them. I have some Ardent Edge reels and they perform every bit as good as a Daiwa or Shimano.

I completely agree, I'm not one of those guys who is hard core everything they buy has to be made in America. I just thought this would be an interesting topic to discuss since there's many rods made here but no bass reels. Japan reels are awesome! And I will continue to buy them.

I was gonna say US Reels (Jimmy Houston reels) are made in the USA, but I just found out they went out of business in 2013. Shame too. I know some people hated them (lots of people that never used them seemed to have really strong opinions...) but I can tie a gnat's butthole to mine and cast it a city block. Them suckers can throw like nothing I've ever used.

Labor costs and taxes are really high in the US which makes it hard to compete. As Metallica says "sad but true"!
See you on the lake and have a great day!

Ardent quit making reels here about 3 years ago I still use the Ardent Edge it is comparable with any of the others. The first reels had some problems but I never got better service from any other company. I stepped on mine broke the thumb bar called them to get a thumb bar and the lady insisted I send it back even though it wasn't their problem. I sent it on Monday had it back in 3 days no charge. They made a couple of models before the Edge but they really got it on that one. Problem people would pay more for a reel made across the pond than one made here.
