As I drive across the country it is clear that corn is the #1 crop that the majority of farmers grow. A quick Google search sheds some light on why.

Today's corn crop is mainly used for biofuels (roughly 40 percent of U.S. corn is used for ethanol) and as animal feed (roughly 36 percent of U.S. corn, plus distillers grains left over from ethanol production, is fed to cattle, pigs and chickens). Much of the rest is exported.Mar 5, 2013

A 2010 study by the Environmental Working Group estimated that the cumulative ethanol subsidies between 2005 and 2009 were US$17 billion. The same study estimated the future cost to taxpayers at US$53.59 billion if these tax credits were extended until 2015, yielding 15 billion US gallons (56.8 billion liters).

Not what they initially claimed it would do.

"Most prior studies have found that substituting biofuels for gasoline will reduce greenhouse gases because biofuels sequester carbon through the growth of the feedstock. These analyses have failed to count the carbon emissions that occur as farmers worldwide respond to higher prices and convert forest and grassland to new cropland to replace the grain (or cropland) diverted to biofuels. By using a worldwide agricultural model to estimate emissions from land-use change, we found that corn-based ethanol, instead of producing a 20% savings, nearly doubles greenhouse emissions over 30 years and increases greenhouse gases for 167 years. Biofuels from switchgrass, if grown on U.S. corn lands, increase emissions by 50%. ."

This is absolutely true. And living proof of the power of votes/$$ when congressmen are passing legislation.
Or, when leaving legislation in place that needs to be changed.

Subsidies left about 5 years ago. That is 2 years after this study was done. There had been a subsidy for ethanol for about 30 years prior to it ending in 2012.
With no subsidy, ethanol is cheaper than gasoline however it also has less energy than gasoline.

I don't think your comment on subsidies is accurate.
