Stem is brown, belly has a yellow(ish) spot, hollow when thumped, and heavy. Spot on!

Ok rookies...
On the vine, look for the curly pigtail on the vine near the melon. When it turns brown the melon is ripe. Never mind the bottom side yellow spot, it means nothing.
Thumping, the only thumpable melons are ones that split the heart open while ripening. Black Diamonds are the only melon I know that qualifies.
Buying retail, look for freshness, a green stem still attached means fresh. Look for a large, well shaped melon. Hold it like you are cradling a baby and pat it on top. A ripe melon will transmit this tap vibrations to your cradling arm. If you can't feel the vibes, bad melon.
Bonus, for cantaloupe, mash with your thumb on the stem attach point or the point opposite, then smell. If it smells like cantaloupe and your mouth waters, it's ripe and sweet.

I remember the good old days of getting east Texas melons at the farmers markets.
They looked like blimps.They would be 20 pounds easy.

Marshall melons in the 60's rested on the floor of the ice house on Main St. Mostly Black Diamonds, and they approached 100 pounds. Melons these days are under 40 pounds so as to be safe to handle.

One thing about cantaloupes, they do not further ripen once they've been picked. For optimum ripeness, look at stem end and if it is full slip, meaning vine end popped out and caused a recession on melon it was picked perfect. Half slips or no slips are no good! Although, cantaloupes will get sweeter because the starches turn to sugars in the meat.
