The last day of April rolled in cool and clear after a very warm and muggy Saturday the day before. J-Moe and I fished both days working the upper Yegua early Saturday but finding nothing there we jumped over to Nails Creek with pretty much the same results.

The COE had shut the flow to the spillway now that the lake is at normal level and the fish are stacked up close to the chute. J-Moe found a few goo and sunfish but not much else between the herds of buffalo and gangs of gar. We called it quits after lunch and headed home.

The cool front that blew in Sunday morning brought with it lots of sunshine and cooler temperatures which greatly aggravates my ability to stay on task for the things I need to do at home. After a wonderful church service and a quick lunch I headed off to the creek once again. The sights and sounds of Nature on a sunny April Sunday afternoon are pretty hard to beat as therapy for a busy sometimes hectic life.

Great video, I especially like the part around the 10 minute mark when J-Moe catches that big hybrid grin

Lake is at normal level with no flow being released.

I fished below the dam a few times since the COE shut off the flow. I'm catching lots of bluegill. Lots of crappie but only 1 in 15 keeper size. Other people have been catching some nice catfish as well. Lots of buffalo and gar stacked up.

The shad are still pushing shallow on the main lake in the mornings and the white bass are following. It was finally calm enough to launch the yak on Saturday morning. I caught a few on the fly rod but they didn't stay shallow for long. There were other bank fishermen doing well catching them on rattle traps.

I went to the dam on Friday evening and fly fished in the spillway with a couple of my fellow fly fishing buddies. We caught about 10 buffalo (in the mouth), snagged too many to count, 2 white bass, 1 hybrid, a few gar, crappie, bluegill and largemouth as well. Someone came down and said the white bass were surfacing on the lake side. So we headed over to the lake side and saw them down a ways. We ran and caught up to them and started catching them on the fly rod. We had to keep moving quickly to keep up with them until they turned around and started heading back in the opposite direction. We chased them a bit longer before they finally disappeared.

It was an absolute blast banana

I took the yak out to the main lake last night. Once again, I found white bass surfacing right at sunset. I ended up catching 13 or 14 before it started getting dark and I headed home. I might have to do this a few more times this year grin

I went back out to the main lake again yesterday evening. The pattern was about the same. The white bass start surfacing around 7:30 and it was over around 8:15. I'm having to use the yak to get to them with the fly rod but they could be easily reached with a surf rod or even normal rods at times. Most of the ones I am catching are around 11 to 12 inches.

The Lake level is 238.02 ft with no release

The Yegua at Irwin bridge is up about 2 ft. and muddy.

The other creeks are in good shape and packed with bluegill. I've been catching them on every cast when I find them.

A good place is just towards main lake from apache hills. The point south of that cove on way to welsh used be great for white bass at daybreak. Chuck rattle traps in 5-6' thumb

No record, although a couple of the bluegill were big enough to break my current record.

Yegua creek is still up about a foot an dirty. The rest of the creeks are still fishing well for bluegill.

Nothing but gar and buffalo below the dam.

I went out to Welsh park this morning. The shad were shallow and the LMB were chasing them. I put on a popper dropper (froggy/magical clouser) and caught 10 standing in the same spot for about an hour. No signs of the white bass coming shallow this morning.

The creeks came up about a foot after the last rain but receded back to normal very quickly. The Yegua was still too dirty for me to fish but the others are in good shape. I've been catching some big bluegill in both the creeks and on the main lake. Somerville is quickly moving from a good to very good Bluegill lake.

I went back out to Welsh park to chase the bass again but the shad did not show up in numbers and neither did the LMB. I caught only 2.

I tried below the dam but it's just to depressing. So many buffalo and gar. There was a large crowd there on Saturday. I'm not sure if they are catching anything.

I went out to Overlook park this morning to search for longear and green sunfish. I did finally find some long ear sunfish but didn't find any greenies. I caught quite a few big bluegill and a couple bass during my search.
